  4. Case studies • I took a risk because before coming to France, I did not have any job offers and I knew nobody who could help me to settle in ... in Morocco ... I had stable employment ... My parents were ashamed because they wanted me to stay in Morocco and get married, they wanted me to be like all the women ... But, for me, this was a risk worth taking ... to migrate to France was to gain freedom as a woman ... to go live in a country which believes in democracy, in the rights of men and women ... A MOROCCAN PROFESSOR I wanted to flee from the social injustice in Morocco and to live in France as a free woman ...

  5. Case studies • They say it is normal in Germany ... I had a boss who blocked everything, and would make negative observations to me every day. ... In addition, on a personal level, I wanted to leave and experience different traditions, and also to see a big city like Paris, with sports clubs and all. I also wanted to experience the multicultural aspect, a different culture ... Making the decision to migrate implied losing my job and the security attached to it ... I perceived that moving to France would largely compensate these A GERMAN QUALITY MANAGER In Germany ... I was underpaid considering my qualifications, 30% below what I would have been earning if I were a man.

  6. Case studies • ... I found myself faced with forces and people who sought to block my paper, which was very hard ... At first, I wanted to go to Canada or to the USA, because I thought people there were more open towards foreigners than French people are ... And I did not want to come to France since I had nothing to gain there, I knew I was not going to be able to be a journalist, the job I do best, in France (...). To leave was to lose everything I had in Algeria, my spouse who did not want to go with me, my children, my work ... It was very risky, but I had no choice. AN ALGERIAN PR DIRECTOR I had trouble in Algeria with the paper where I worked as an editor ... Ever since 1992, my paper had been experiencing various problems, also because of the rising Islamist parties

  7. Case studies • I didn't want to stay in Romania, ... I didn't want to work in a corrupt environment where you have to be friends with all the right people in order to succeed ... I received a job offer which included an interesting salary package in Romania but I rejected it, because I wanted to leave the country ... it was risky ... but it was absolutely necessary to leave Romania ... Because of this decision, I fought with my parents ... I didn't want to go to France, the idea I had of the way people work there was unpleasant ... I knew I had nothing more to learn in my area A ROMANIAN DATA PROCESSING ENGINEER I was not interested in coming to France ... but this was the only possibility I got to escape my country. Originally, I wanted to go to Sweden or Norway but it didn't work out ...

  8. Case studies • I often asked my husband to talk to me in French so that I could learn the language ... I watched TV and listened to radio in French ... I was ready to do all it takes to learn about the culture and to understand how to communicate with the French ... at work ... I bought cook books to learn French cuisine . . . culinary arts are important in France ... I even signed up for cooking classes ... it was also a way of quickly meeting some people in France ... and to make new friends ... A MEXICAN AUDITOR I wanted to come to France ... I thought it would be a good experience ... I wanted to meet French people to better understand the country's culture and traditions.

  9. Case studies • At the company . . . they accompanied me in my apartment search and helped me to establish a good relationship with the landlords ... When I arrived I received training ... they gave me a lot of information which might not help French people but was important to me ... I really appreciated that help ... it encouraged me to socialize with my French colleagues and to engage with their culture, which I would not have done otherwise ... Thus, I worked a lot, during my lunch breaks, my weekends, and I did not count the hours I spent working AN ALGERIAN FINANCIAL MANAGERI did not want to come to France ... I had a lot of preconceived notions about the French and France . . . but I did not have the choice ... I wasn't ready to make any efforts to integrate in France ...

  10. Case studies • I really like French culture ... To integrate in France, I take part in all of the holidays here ... Christmas, Easter ... I like sharing these holidays with my French friends ... By leaving my country, I lost my job ... and the contact with my friends, my family ... nevertheless, I was happy to have the opportu- nity to come to France ... when I arrived in France, it was important for me to feel good at work ... but the social aspect was even more important to me ... this is why I have put more effort into it ... I didn't want to miss out on invitations to participate in family or cultural events A MOROCCAN MANAGING DIRECTORAt the time, it was the political situation in Morocco that was disastrous ... there was also a lot of unemployment ... but I don't consider myself to be a political refugee or an economic refugee ... I had always been attracted to France ...

  11. Case studies • and to fully take advantage of this environment ... I do lots of sports at a multicultural association here ... I like it a lot, it is a bit like a big family because there are people of all ages . . . with whom I can go out and feel like part of a community ... It is true that I have left my job in Germany ... and it was not easy to go through ... it was very important to me to feel at ease in my new city ... to know my way around ... this is why I put so much effort into sports activities upon my arrival in France . . . even if I considered my job to be important as well ... and that I had to do what I could to make it ... A GERMAN QUALITY MANAGERIndeed there is always a risk, but the risk of being unhappy in Germany was 100%. So the risk of coming to France was ... a positive risk! ... I really wanted to come to Paris ... a multi- cultural city ...

Whatdrivesme? • Goal setting is designed to motivate individuals to achieve something of personal interest. • These goals should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely. • By creating goals that adhere to the “SMART” principle, the achievement of personal milestones becomes more attainable.

Whatdrivesme? • Twootherkindofmotivationsare also importanttoconsider: • Intrinsicmotivation • Extrinsicmotivation In general, individuals seek and prefer intrinsic motivation (self-determination), which results in good performance and a high level of well-being. Intrinsic motivation produces high performance over the long term.

  15. CAN I DO IT? IMPORTANCE OF INTRINSIC MOTIVATION “ doing of an activity for its inherent satisfactions rather than for some separable consequences” (Ryan & Deci 2000) BASED ON THREE BASIC PSYCHOLOGICAL NEEDS

  16. CAN I DO IT? • AUTONOMY • Concerns with the urge to be causal agents and to act in harmony with our integrated self. • To be autonomous does not mean to be independent. It means having a sense of free will when doing something or acting out of our own interests and values.

  17. CAN I DO IT? • COMPETENCE • The need for competence means the desire to control and master the environment and outcome. • We want to know how things will turn out and what the results are of our actions.

  18. CAN I DO IT? • RELATEDNESS • It deals with the desire to “interact with, be connected to, and experience caring for other people”. • Our actions and daily activities involve other people and through this, we seek the feeling of belongingness.
