  2. Strategic site and valuable trading post, offering control of eastern Mediterranean; • Has been ruled by others and contested throughout history; • Owners include d Egypt , Persia, Rome, Assyria, Byzantium, Richard the Lionheart, Knights Templars.

  3. Acquired by Venice in 1489; • Acquired through marriage into Cyprus royal family; • Furthest east of Venetian possessions. Number of fortifications built.

  4. Attacked by Ottoman Turks 1570 with large force; • Most of the island fell quickly and easily; Turks slaughtered lots of Europeans; • Secured by the Turks after year long siege of fortified Famagusta.
