  1. Using the Triple Beam Balance

  2. Triple Beam Balance: • Units: g (metric) • Place in center of lab table. • Before zeroing: • Clean the pan • Put thesliding masses at zero on each beam • Check if zeroed: white line of pointer lines up with zero line. • If not Zeroed: • Pointer below zero line, turn the zero adjust knob away from you. Adds mass to the pan. • Pointer above zero line, turn the zero adjust knob towards yourself. Adds mass to pointer.

  3. Measure objects: • Place on pan, adjust the sliding mass until pointer is zeroed. Make sure masses are in notch. • NO partials numbers. No fractions. • Add the readings on the three beams to get the mass.

  4. What would be the mass of the object measured in the picture? _______ + ______ + _______ = ________ g Rear beam 10’s Middlebeam 100’s Front beam 1’s

  5. Exact Measuring: • Adjusting Mass for container: • If substance to be measured is a solid • ¼ sheet paper or container on pan. Measure the mass • Pour substance onto paper/container. Measure the mass. • Subtract measurements of two masses. This gives you the mass of the substance only. • If substance to be measured is a liquid; • Beaker or other container on pan. Measure mass of beaker/container. • Pour substance onto beaker/container. Measure the mass. • Subtract measurements of two masses. This gives you the mass of the substance only.
