3. Active • Retain knowledge best by doing something active • Also learn by applying it or explaining it to others • “Let’s try it out and see how it works”- active • Like group work • Should try to study in a group to enhance the class

4. Reflective • Prefer to think about a topic quietly • “Let’s think it through first” • Prefer to work alone • To study write short summaries of readings or class note

Sensing • Enjoys learning facts • Likes problem solving • Doesn’t like being tested on items that have not be thoroughly covered • Patient with details • Good at memorizing facts & doing hands on labs • Practical and careful • Courses must have real world applications • May rely too much on memorization • Ask for specific details in class or do additional research

Intuitive • Prefer discovering possibilities & relationships • Enjoy innovation and dislike repetition • Good at grasping new concepts & abstract/mathematical calculations • Tend to work faster • Do not like memorization and routines • Can miss important details • Ask for interpretations or theories to link facts • Easy to make careless mistakes on tests due to impatience

7. Visual • Remember what they see- pictures, diagrams, carts, demonstrations, etc • Search for matching diagrams in outside studies • Watch videos or cd’s relating to the topic • Color code your notes with a highlighter

8. Verbal • Learn from words • Like written and spoken explanations • Enjoy listening to lectures • Write out summaries & outlines of your notes • Working in groups can be effective

9. Sequential • Gain understanding in linear steps • Follow logical plans in finding solutions • May not fully understand but can still complete the steps involved • Struggles in a class with random teachers • Need to be sure to ask for “missing steps” and clarification • Should outlines lecture materials to help study

10. Global • Learns best in large jumps • Absorbs information randomly • Usually don’t understand to start but has a ‘lightbulb’ moment of understanding • Have to grasp the whole picture before understanding the steps • When studying skim over the information for major points then look for the details • Need to relate to what the information to what you already know
