Attitude Attitude Preparation Perseverance Respect Honesty Integrity Courage Appreciation Self-Control Empathy Gratitude Tolerance Duty Loyalty Responsibility Compassion Leadership Character MATTIE STEPANEK • Mattie was a young boy who became a famous poet at the age of 10. • He was good friends with Oprah Winfrey and Jimmy Carter. • Mattie’s first book was titled Heartsongs. • Mattie died in 2004 at the age of 13. • This is the most emotional chapter in the book. While he is an inspirational person, the chapter makes many people cry.

Don’t write the questions down. • Why do you think we are spending a semester • devoted to learning about character and leadership? • What is your “character”? What is a “trait”? • Do you think that having a positive attitude is important? Why or why not? • Looking through the list of topics for the semester, which traits do you recognize and which do you not?

  7. Definitions: 1. Trait: a characteristic or a part of someone’s personality. 2. Ethics (Ethical): moral principals; your ideas of “right vs. wrong” 3. Dilemma: a situation where you have to make a tough decision

  17. Grading Categories • There are 6 main categories that you will be graded on during your presentations this semester. They are: • Eye contact • Volume • Speed • Articulation • Stance • Content

  18. 1. Eye Contact • Looking the audience members in the eye • Do not read your notes the whole time • No bobble-head dolls!

  19. 2. Volume • Not too loud or too quiet • Conversational tone • Speak to the corners of the classroom

  20. 3. Speed • Not to fast or too slow • Appropriate pauses between sentences or ideas

  21. 4. Articulation • How clearly you are speaking • Don’t mumble or trail off • Don’t jumble all your words together in a long string!

  22. 5. Stance • No hoods, hats, or backpacks • Don’t fiddle with clothing or hair • Be tall and stand with presence! • Don’t sway or shake your limbs • Hold your notecards low and still

  23. 6. Content • Did you follow the instructions? • Did you answer the question? • Did you give a whole presentation that followed any length requirements? • Was your presentation meaningful and engaging?

  24. General Rules • Everyone presents, but we will practice and build up to class presentations • The audience members MUST be quiet and respectful • We will practice each category • You will be graded on each category on a scale of 1, 2, 3 • Needs improvement • Average • Great job!

  25. Let’s Practice - • Share your responses to Questions 1A and 1B from your ethical dilemma on pg. 12. • Maintain good eye contact and good stance • Let your partner share their responses • Repeat with someone else until the timer goes off

  26. 8/28: Attitude Reflection: page 5R What does attitude mean to you now? What have you learned throughout the week about the importance of having a positive attitude? Is this a positive trait that you already have or is it one you need to work on? How do you think your attitude in school/in this class affects your grades or your high school experience? How will your attitude affect you after high school? How did the characters you learned about this week (Mattie & Jimmy) inspire you to have a positive attitude?
