  1. Sean Jones Sponsorship Director KU Dance Marathon (KUDM)

  2. Can you tell me a little bit about your position on the board at KUDM? The Sponsorship Director establishes and maintains relationships with businesses in the Lawrence and surrounding areas. I also oversees the fulfillment of catering needs for Dance Marathon. Responsibilities include updating and distributing the KUDM Sponsorship Packet, serving as the liaison of all organizational printing needs, and securing in-kind donations for KUDM promotional items, which will be designed with the assistance of the Media Relations Director.

  3. How did you get involved with KUDM? Did you submit an application or did you get the board member position through connections? I attended my first marathon in February of 2012 and fell in love. Alex Ross who had started KUDM at the University of Kansas in 2008 as a freshman talked to me heavily about becoming involved. Because he was a friend of mine, I took what he had to say to heart and became a committee member for the following marathon through an application process. Shortly after, applications went live for next year's Steering Committee and many of us committee members were eager to apply due to a large number of Steering being seniors this year. I feel as if the interview process was quite smooth, due to my prior commitment to KUDM as a committee member and I knew my interviewers on a personal level.

  4. What do you think set you apart from fellow applicants? What set me apart from other applicants was the fact that I had experience in running events and that I was good friends with the guy who started this great event on our campus. I believe that I was chosen because I am organized and can delegate tasks to committee members in order to get tasks done. I know it is very important for us to raise money for the families, therefore I feel more obligated to reach the financial goal to help the kids out.

  5. About how long have you been a board member? I have been a member of Steering as of January 2013 as we prepare for our event November 9, 2013

  6. About how many hours a week would you say you devote to KUDM? Right now, I would say I spend about 5-8 hours a week right now solely on KUDM, but as the date gets closer I should be spending around 10-20 hours getting hotel rooms for the family, confirming catering from restaurants, and securing sponsors and grants for the marathon to run as smoothly as possible.

  7. I know from speaking with you that you're very passionate about KUDM. How important do you think passion is when working for an organization such as KUDM? Being passionate about an organization is very important while being in college. For the most part, people view college students as lazy people who only care about themselves, but through organizations that reach out to the community, we can change the public's view of students at KU.

  8. Is there a favorite event or memory from working with KUDM that you could share with me? My fondest memory of KUDM came my freshman year, when I first went to the marathon as just a dancer. Each person is given a wristband with a child of one of the families we are sponsoring. I found the kid who was on my wristband, Noah, and befriended him. We played four square and Twister and it felt really great to help him forget about all his worries. I then learned what it was like to be carefree again and wanted to instill that ideal on all kids, because I know those were and are the best times of my life.

  9. After working for KUDM and being a part of their events, do you think this is something you would want to continue doing for a career? I don't know if working through non-profit organizations is something I want to do the rest of my life, but I will definitely continue supporting KUDM long after I graduate.

  10. If you could offer KU students deciding on becoming a part of KUDM or working with nonprofits for a career any advice, what would you tell them? If you are going to be working for a non-profit organization, do it for that cause and not as a resume booster. Yes, this great opportunity that has been bestowed upon me will extend the experiences for future employers to see, I look at it as a learning experience. Through KUDM I am learning how to interact with all kinds of people and schedule meetings and small events in order to reach a larger goal. Make sure you research the organization you want to get involved in, and just because your friends may not enjoy it as much as you, stick with it if it makes you happy.
