  2. Roles in the Courtroom • Judge: • Hear allegations, listen to testimony, advise lawyers and settle disputes • They also determine a sentence

  3. The Jury • Decides the truth, or otherwise, of evidence • Must be impartial • Come to a verdict (guilty or not guilty) • Decision must be unanimous

  4. Defendant • The person who has been charged with a crime

  5. Deputy Sheriff • The deputy provides security in the courtroom

  6. Court Reporter • Keeps the official record by recording every spoken word

  7. Witnesses • Each side in a trial will probably have a number witnesses who have information about the dispute

  8. Prosecutor • Role is to prove that the defendant did in fact commit the crime
