The Ottoman Empire was known for its generally tolerant approach to different religions, which allowed a diverse society to flourish. Militarily, it engaged in long and fierce conflicts, especially with the Safavid Empire of Persia, while also focusing on conquest and territorial expansion. Elite military units known as the janissaries were formed from boys trained for service. Economically, the empire boasted rich lands and successful trading cities; however, while the military and government were tax-exempt, the working class shouldered the tax burden. Sultans wielded absolute power under a meritocratic system.
