  1. Chapter 2—The French in North America Social Studies 7

  2. Jacques Cartier’s Second Journey • Cartier learned of a large amount of natural resources in an area North of the Stadacona settlement. In the spring of 1536, he took several members of Donnacona’s people (and Donnacona himself) back to France against their will as evidence to finance another expedition.

  3. Cartier Visits Again • In 1542, Cartier made his final journey to North America, planning to establish a colony along the St. Lawrence. • By this time, the Haudenosaunee Cartier had taken with him to Europe had died. Not wishing to upset their people, Cartier told them that their companions were still alive in Europe (written accounts suggest the Haudenosaunee did not believe him). This turned the relations between the two groups hostile.

  4. Cartier Visits Again • Cartier’s plans for colonization were abandoned as a result of a harsh winter. • Not wishing to return to France empty-handed, Cartier brought what he believed to be diamonds and gold back with him. The diamonds turned out to be quartz (relatively inexpensive rock) and the gold a useless mineral (pyrite, or “fool’s gold”). For these reasons, expansion into North America was temporarily abandoned. • Despite failing to establish a lasting colony, Cartier’s work exploring the Atlantic coast of the North was extremely valuable.

  5. Letter Assignment • Pretend that you are a French sailor exploring North America with Jacques Cartier. • Write a letter to your family at home in which you describe the land and people you have encountered. Your letter should be descriptive, thorough, and 1 page long. • If you finish this letter, you have the remainder of the block to work on your title page.

  6. Renewed Interest • As a result of Cartier’s failure to establish a colony along the St. Lawrence, France did not sponsor a voyage to the area for nearly 50 years. • Private French vessels were still journeying to the region to: • Take advantage of the high concentrations of Cod and other fish off the coast of Newfoundland • Trade for furs with First Nations trappers
