  1. Summary of New England Reactive Power Requirements Reactive Power Working Group May 18, 2005

  2. Existing Voltage Control Issues • High voltage conditions experienced during light load periods • Boston Area • Controlled by generation, reactors, switching cables out of service • Northern New England 345 kV system • Controlled by generation, reactors • Cape Cod area • Controlled by generation

  3. Existing Voltage Control Issues • Low voltage conditions experienced during high transfers • SWCT import limit • Affected by capacitors, generation, DVARs • CT import limit • Affected by capacitors, generation • ME-NH export limit • Affected by capacitors, widespread generation • NWVT import limit • Affected by capacitors, Statcom

  4. Future Voltage Control Issues/Solutions • Boston Area • N Cambridge reactor (with improved connection), and variable reactors/dynamic device (potential) • Variable reactors/dynamic device can address potential low voltage conditions that may be experienced during potential high transfer/ low area generation dispatch scenarios • Northern New England 345 kV • Shunt reactor, dynamic device (potential) • Cape Cod area • Dynamic device (potential)

  5. Future Voltage Control Issues/Solutions • SWCT low voltage-based import limit • Bethel-Norwalk-Middletown 345 kV • Dynamic devices (potential) • SWCT high voltage • Variable reactors • CT low voltage-based import limit • Dynamic device (potential), new transmission line(s) • ME-NH low voltage-based import limit • Dynamic device, reconfiguration • NWVT low voltage-based import limit • Northwest Vermont Reliability Project
