The Rise of Puritanism and Early Democracy in New England
The Puritans established the Plymouth Colony to eliminate Catholic influences and practice their faith without tolerance for other religions. The Great Migration in 1630 saw many Puritans, including John Winthrop, fleeing civil unrest in England. Key political moves included the Mayflower Compact, which laid the groundwork for limited democracy, allowing only certain white male landowners to participate. However, issues like the Halfway Covenant and the Salem Witch Trials reflected internal societal conflicts. Meanwhile, colonies like Rhode Island and Connecticut emerged, promoting religious tolerance and self-governance.
