Solutions require analysis of IS’s very successful exploitation of social media platforms, underpinned by an understanding of the cultural dimensions that are opaque to most ‘Western’ observers. In this seminar the role of Wahhabism, Salafism, Islamic Eschatology and the changing nature of Jihad will be explored to help explain IS’s unique interpretation of Islam - using examples and an analysis of the key elements in their social media strategy. Bio: Kate joined the DOD through the Graduate Program. She studied at the University of Melbourne, holds a BA (Hons), MA, and recently deferred her PhD – all in Islamic Studies and Middle Eastern Politics. She also worked as a tertiary level research assistant and management advisor in this field. Kate aims to help bridge the gap between the perception and reality of Islam in the West and has researched how this intersects with trade and security both in Australia and internationally.
