Blue Ridge Community CollegeBRCC • Serves two counties in western North Carolina • Henderson County Campus • 180 West Campus Dr., Flat Rock • Transylvania County Campus • 45 Oak Park Dr., Brevard • Rural communities • 2,308 curriculum students enrolled for fall semester, 2013 • 1,604 adult education students enrolled in 2011-2012

  7. South Piedmont Community College SPCC • Serves Union and Anson counties • Union County • One of the fastest growing counties in NC • Suburb of Charlotte • Anson County • Population ≈ 27,000 • Rural

  8. South Piedmont Community College SPCC • Newest CC in NCCCS • Established in 1999 • Merger of Anson CC and UTEC • Spring 2013 Adult Basic Skills enrollment • Union – 2019 students • Anson – 369 students

  9. Intake and Entry

Intake Process – BRCC • Explain program to entire group of new students • Meet with any individual students who are interested • Explain commitment to students who want to participate and help them complete enrollment forms and college application • Work with registrar’s office to register students in classes

Intake Process – SPCC • Heavily recruit from within the college • Basic Skills • HRD • Continuing Education • All students interested in the program must meet with CCT staff to discuss program requirements, expectations, etc. • CCT staff assist students with the college admissions process • CPT is waived for the first semester of classes • CCT students attend a 2 day orientation

Financial Assistance – BRCC • Tuition and registration fees waived through Basic Skills Plus • Student activity fees and student insurance fees are paid for from bookstore receipts • Work with cashier’s office to ensure proper billing • Books and supplies may be covered by grants or bookstore receipts • Work with bookstore to obtain necessary materials

Financial Assistance – BRCC • Apply for Scholarships through various organizations • Students may apply for a $750 high school equivalency scholarship from the College Foundation if their total GED score is at least 2700 (by current testing standards) • Once students obtain their high school equivalency, they can apply for financial aid • Work with financial aid office to assist students

  15. Financial Assistance – SPCC • Current Financial Assistance • $250 free course voucher • Student fees paid by bookstore funds • Textbooks are purchased for classroom use • Gas cards

  16. Financial Assistance – SPCC • Fall 2014 • Students who score 6.0 – 8.9 will receive funding using the current formula • Students who score 9.0 and above will qualify for tuition funding using BSP funds

  21. External Resources - BRCC • Develop partnerships with outside agencies • Learn about what resources agencies offer • Explain Accelerating Transitions program to agencies • Leave rack cards with agencies to publicize program

  22. External Resources - BRCC • Agencies: • Local Division of Workforce Solutions (DWS) • Housing Authority • Homeless Shelter • The Healing Place – helps those who have been sexually abused • Mainstay – helps those who have been abused • DSS – TANF/Work First and Snap

External Resources - BRCC • Agencies continued: • National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) • Received pamphlet about NAMI through Caring Emergency Coalition meeting • Took a class that dealt with people living with someone with mental illness • A lot of the information was useful in dealing with all people

  24. External Resources - BRCC • Agencies continued: • Caring Emergency Coalition • Representatives from many local organizations • Meets monthly • Advisory Boards • Representatives from local employers meet quarterly

External Resources - BRCC • Be willing to help other organizations • Did a presentation at the Job Service Employer Committee quarterly meeting at the request of the Division of Workforce Solutions manager • Did a presentation at a Henderson County Homeless Coalition meeting at the request of a member attending the Caring meeting • I’m now the treasurer of the local chapter of NAMI

  28. ABE/ASE Students – BRCC • We help students get to the 9th grade level through contextualized teaching • Assist students in completing the high school credential • Aid students with any basic skills issues that they may encounter

  29. ABE/ASE Students – SPCC • Students are able to enroll in our CCT program at the 6.0 level on the TABE • Students are co-enrolled in ABE/ASE classes as well as curriculum courses • Students receive direct and contextualized instruction in the Basic Skills classroom

  30. Integrated Classes – BRCC • We have one integrated class for each pathway • A basic skills instructor is in the curriculum class along with the curriculum instructor • The basic skills instructor is there to help all students in the class

Integrated Classes – SPCC • 1-2 team-taught classes per pathway • Basic Skills and curriculum instructor co-plan • Basic Skills and curriculum instructor team teach 75-100% of seated class time • Basic Skills department provides assistance outside of the classroom for all students enrolled in integrated classes

Support Classes - BRCC • When needed, additional support outside of curriculum class time • Help with basic skills and, to the best ability of the basic skills instructor, curriculum course content • Example – we currently have a support class for Records Mgt. (part of the Office Administration program) to help students at scheduled class times in the basic skills dept. which is in addition to the curriculum class times

  35. Additional Support – BRCC • Help students with miscellaneous financial needs • Get help from IAM • Financial • Clothing • Bus tickets • Assistance from church • Assist with whatever issues the student may need help with to be successful in school

Additional Support - BRCC • Guide on how to proceed after completing high school credential • What forms need to be completed and where to get them • Offer to assist students if they need help, but let them be responsible for getting the forms and completing what they can on their own • Available to students even after high school credential is obtained

  38. In Conclusion • Completing a high school credential is a great accomplishment… • Obtaining postsecondary education is the key to a better job!
