THE 25th INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEAN-UP • Legal Basis: • The coastal and waterways clean-up are embodied in Presidential Proclamation # 244 dated September 3, 1992 signed by then Pres. Fidel V. Ramos declaring September of every Year as National Clean-Up Month. • This was reinforced/strengthened by Presidential Proclamation No. 470 dated September 15, 2003 signed by then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, declaring every 3rd Saturday of September as International Coastal Clean-Up (ICC). • Objectives of ICC • To educate communities situated along the target water bodies about the adverse effects of improper waste disposal on water bodies through IEC saturation with the end view of mulitsectoral formation within the area; • To mobilize communities, civil society, academe, OGAs and other sectors of society to execute a massive one (1) day clean-up of the water bodies within their jurisdiction • In 2009 the Philippines placed second in coastal clean-up by mobilizing 74,493 volunteers who cleaned-up a total of 327,345.72 kilograms of debris covering a total of 2,427.36 kilometers.
