  2. Los usos Read more about the uses of reflexive verbs! • Action that is performed by the subject on the same subject • In English, these things are implied. • Elena se baña. She bathes (herself) • Action that is performed by the subject on a part of the subject’s own body or clothing • Possessive adjectives are NOT used with these (my hair=el pelo) • Elena se lava el pelo. She washes her hair • Expressing changes or transformations in the nature, behavior, or attitude of the subject. • In English, we use “get” or “become” plus an adjective • Me enfermo cuando como demasiada pizza. I get sick when I eat too much pizza. • Action that is reciprocal • In English, we use “each other” or “one another” • Los estudiantes se miran. The students look at each other” • Action that is unexpected or unplanned • In English, we use “each other” or “one another” • La televisión se apagó • Action that is impersonal-a subject is not identified (general) • In English, we use a passivesentence • Se hablaespanolaqui. Spanish is spoken here. Because the subject is being "acted upon" (or is passive), such sentences are said to be in the passive voice, versus the subject doing the action (active sentence) Learn about passive and active sentences here!

  3. Reflexive infinitives • Reflexive infinitives end in “se” • Translates to: To _____________ (oneself)

  4. Conjugating reflexives • Find the infinitive • lavarse • Take off the “se” • lavar • Follow the steps to conjugation • lavo • Decide if the sentence is reflexive • I wash my hair vs. I wash the dog • If not reflexive, stop! • Match the subject with the R.P. • Yo=me • Place R.P. directly in front of verb • Yo me lavo=I wash up Remember, since you are conjugating, you still need to look for stem changing and irregulars! Learn more about reflexive pronoun use! CONJUGATED VERB Practice here!

  5. Conjugating reflexives: two verbs in a sentence • One verb: • Follow the steps to conjugating reflexives • Two verbs: • Follow the steps to conjugation for the first verb in the sentence • Put the reflexive infinitive directly after the conjugated verb You brush your hair. Cepillarse Cepillar Cepillas You=te Tecepillas el pelo. • Drop the “se” • Match the subject with the new reflexive pronoun • Attach the new R.P. to the end of the infinitive • This is NOT conjugating, it is simply attaching a pronoun to an infinitive • Finish the sentence • You want to brush your hair. • You want=Quieres • Quierescepillarse • Quierescepillar • You=te • Quierescepillarte • Quierescepillarte el pelo Remember: Where can pronouns be placed? *In front of a conjugated verb *Attached to an infinitive Attached to a gerund Attached to a positive command

  6. Conjugating reflexives: other tenses • Following the steps to conjugation includes choosing a tense! • I brushed my hair last night. • To brush=cepillarse • Me cepillé el peloanoche. More examples: Do more practice!
