SAP DOT Program | Substance Abuse Professional DOT Program In the United States, the SAP DOT Program | Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) DOT program is designed to help employers must comply with the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations which require that any employee found to be under the influence of any mind altering substances while on duty must be referred to a SAP for evaluation, education, treatment, and monitoring. The SAP is responsible for evaluating an employee’s substance abuse and for making recommendations for treatment and follow-up care. The SAP also helps employers develop policies and procedures for drug and alcohol testing and provides counselling when an employee has tested positive for drugs or alcohol. Under the SAP DOT program, an employee who tests positive for drugs or alcohol while on duty must be immediately referred to a SAP for evaluation. The SAP will then evaluate the employee to determine if they have a substance abuse problem and if so, what kind of treatment and monitoring is necessary. The SAP will also provide education and counselling to help the employee better understand their substance abuse and how to avoid it in the future.
