  1. Energy Efficient MAC Protocol with Power and Rate Control in Multi-rate ad hoc networks Masaki Bandai, Satoshi Maeda, and Takashi Watanabe Dept. of Computer Science, Shizuoka (靜岡) University IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference, 2008

  2. Outline • Introduction • Assumption • Protocol • Simulation • Conclusion

  3. Introduction • Motivation • Extending the life of battery is the more important issue in the ad hoc network. • Direct?? • Relay??

  4. Introduction Direct DATA D S ACK A

  5. Introduction Relay ACK D S DATA DATA A

  6. Assumption • Each node prepares a table that includes energy efficiency of all combinations of transmission power and rate.

  7. Protocol Cisco Aironet 350

  8. Protocol P0 is the maximum transmission power . R0 is the base transmission rate.

  9. Protocol E(Pi,Rj) is the energy consumption when transmission power Pi and rate Rj are adopted.

  10. Protocol π(Pi,Rj) dBm is required power to receive a data.

  11. Protocol • When a node receives a control frame such as RTS, the node measures the received power. • Result = PdBm

  19. Protocol • NAV problem • when a node receives a RTS or a RTR, it sets Dnav.

  20. Protocol

  21. Protocol • We assume that number of priority levels is L (level 1 to L), maximum backoff time is Tmaxslottime.
