Immigrants. Immigrants The number of immigrants coming to America grew slowly until 1845. Then a flood of immigrants came to America. The largest group was the IRISH. Mostly unskilled. A potato famine in 1845 killed many Irish and drove many more away.

  2. Immigrants The number of immigrants coming to America grew slowly until 1845. Then a flood of immigrants came to America.

  3. The largest group was the IRISH. Mostly unskilled. A potato famine in 1845 killed many Irish and drove many more away. Most had been farmers, but had no desire to farm now.

  4. The Irish settled where they landed. Mostly along the east coast.

  5. Irish Settlements

  6. The second largest group was the Germans. They were mostly skilled. They settled along the great lakes area. They were very slow to adopt the new customs.

  7. German Settlements

  8. Scandinavians Settled in Minnesota and Wisconsin where the climate and woodlands reminded them of home.
