As the people of Israel settled in the promised land, they were led by “judges”: this was prior to period of kings: • “judges” were “charismatic” leaders moved by Lord(moved by spirit, not by predetermined law or heredity) • there was no established hereditary hierarchy of monarchs • The Bible depicts is as more directly dependent on the Lord’s assistance. Example 1: Gideon as judge (Judges 6:33-40) – he summons tribes as allies to council; awaits Lord’s word before proceeding Example 2: the story of ark and Dagon (1 Samuel 5): - the power is the LORD’S; Israel must rely only on Him. “Dagon”, god of the Philistines, is no match
