  4. Factors That Influence the Movement of People • Push Factors - Reasons that might cause you to leave your present location • Pull Factors – Reasons that might cause you to select a new location

  5. Examples of push/pull: Discuss: Are the examples below push or pull factors? Be able to explain your decision 1. A new community has higher paying jobs. You will earn more money. 2. No one in your present community speaks your native language. 3. Your family lives in another community and you want to move closer to your family and friends.

Cost and Benefits • Benefits – The advantages of a particular action that can be measured by: good feelings, money, opportunities etc. (good things). • Costs – The disadvantages of a particular action that can be measured by: bad feelings, money, loss of opportunities etc. (bad things). There are Costs and Benefits for each decision we make.

  8. Each decision we make causes us to experience both costs and benefits. Group Activity: You decide not to follow the dress code. Friendly Reminders • Remember: Whether it’s a cost and/or a benefit depends on your values, likes, dislikes, age, education, gender, nationality, etc. (point of view) • Example: Cold weather = a benefit for a young person who likes to ski. • Cold weather = a cost for the elderly who have difficulty moving around on ice and snow. • Would cold weather be a push or a pull factor for migration? • Discuss how cold weather might be both a push and a pull.

  15. What is Migration? Migration is the movement of people from one place to another.

  16. What is Immigration? Immigration is the movement of people from one Country to another.

Infrastructure • Basic facilities, services, and buildings needed for the functioning of a community or society (transportation, communication systems, water and sewers, power systems, and public institutions including schools, post offices, and prisons, etc.) • Usually paid for with tax monies • Tends to be a high cost investment • Needed for a country to be efficient and productive.
