About our film Natalie & Lauryn
Films reviews During the last few weeks we have reviewed several films such as last man standing and colombiana. These films are both action films, which have inspired us to create a film of the same genre.
Last man standing • The film starts off with a bright and settled sunset colour that communicates subtleness. The main colours are natural and bland showing the use of a vintage theme to the film. The camera starts off at an establishing shot so we can recognise the setting. The camera angle then moves to a close up of a woman giving us a hint of the actors involved. In a sense there is a warm and sepia coloured filter as the scenery looks very brown and misty. There is non-diegetic music throughout the open scene with a narrator over it. • The genre indicators is the way the man is acting whiles driving the car showing it’s an action movie, also the narrator gives it away. The way the lady is praying shows it’s an action movie as she is aware of what’s happening. The alcohol bottle represents the man’s type of character in a sense as it show’s he is a drinker, him drinking and driving shows he may be a bad character and the narrator states how he’s been on the dodge for most of his life and he is going to hide out.
The audience would be for middle aged men to old men with an action movie interest, aimed at the old as the scenery is vintage and not modern. The main character is a male so it would fit a male’s type of genre more. Men usually tend to watch action movies more than woman so that’s why I think it’s specifically aimed at the male gender. The tone to the film looks very active in fighting so that’s another reason why ladies may not approve to watch it. I don’t think young boys will find as much interest as the older generation as it’s not modern and has a really old scenery to it. • Overall the opening scene was quite successful as it didn’t give too much away. It engaged the reader to want to watch more and to question why the man was on the run. It left the audience on a cliff hanger in a sense as it felt like the movie didn’t start from the beginning but started in the middle of an action that just happened leading the man to go on a runner. The use of giving not too much away leads the audience to wanting to continue to watch it which was really effective.
1. This shot introduces the first proper movement when a carriage comes along quite aggressively. The lighting is dull and dark reinforcing a miserable and gloomy theme. It’s an establishing shot so we can see the setting. The setting is not modern. • 2. This shot shows the camera following the carriage in a very unstable way and starts to zoom in into the carriage to introduce the characters to the audience.
3. This shot is of two faces, indicating the characters in the film; it’s a mild shot so we can see both of the characters. We can also see their mood and emotions through their facial expressions. • 4. This shot of a gun, instantly shows the genre of the film being an action packed genre. Giving the audience negative vibes as we know fighting is involved. The camera angle used is a close up so we can see the significance. The gun is an iconography for an action film/ • 5. This shot is of a man running; this starts to build up tension as the audience is unaware of what’s happening, the non-diegetic music starts to play fast creating even more tension through this scene. The camera is running after him making it tenser.

colombiana • The film Colombiana is an action film, filled with fighting, weapons and fast movement -preferably in a country where there is city or famine- this was all portrayed in the opening scene, due to the fact that the film begun showing the audience what kind of action film it was going to be, as most of the actors in the opening scene were carrying around large weapons threatening several people in their neighbourhood. The camera shots were mainly long shots, to firstly set the scene then to show what was causing disturbance in the setting. Often to show what damages were caused in the scene there would be a variety of close-ups showing robberies and unfortunate deaths. Also extreme close-ups would follow up after the close-ups to convey emotion towards the incidents occurring in the scene. • To keep the paste moving promptly, editing techniques such as cut aways were used as the audience only needs to see a small amount of incidents to get an idea of what the film would be based on. Sound linked with this fluently as the music was very fast and had great energy which enhanced feeling towards the incident occurring in the opening scene. The rhythm of the music throughout the opening scene is like a pulse creating tension for the viewers.
The narrative of the film is not yet shown in the opening scenes, which is quite intriguing as it makes the viewer want to keep watching, although this is the case, it is still very clear that it is an action film from the opening scene, as there is a persistent use of fighting and emotional movement from the very beginning. The scene is also set to be in a country that would often be used for an action film this was effective as the film stuck to its genre style right from the very beginning.
I think the film is rated to be a 15, due to the fact that the use of props, such as weapons and continuous use of violence isn’t suitable for younger viewers. The films target audience would preferably be for men, as the main character is promoted to be quite appealing to men. However the idea of the main character being a woman in an action film, may mean that the film is also appealing to female viewers, because usually in action films the main characters are usually perceived to be a man who is quite strong and macho. The target audience has to be for those viewers who are interested in weapons and fighting as these things are promoted fluently throughout the film.
I really enjoy this film and I personally believe that this film was very successful as its simplicity, in the uses of techniques allowed the film to be presented very clearly allowing the audience to grasp what was going on during the film.
Film choice • Genre – action • why? In my group we have decided to create an action film as we thought it would be fun, entertaining and different in comparison to other groups !
Plot of the film • A little girl witnesses her mother get shot, and as the killer escapes he leaves behind a bag. The little girl keeps the bag and all the items, and on her 18th birthday, uses the items in the bag to hunt down everyone who was involved in her mother’s murder.
First location will be in her home watching her mothers death • Second location will be in a warehouse of some sort, watching her train herself how to become a serial killer
Props/ costume • Guns ,Knives, weapons • Warehouse (old deserted room)
Target audience • The target audience shall be 15+ due to the fact that the scenarios that occur in the film are not appropriate for younger viewers. • The props and narrative in the film are not child friendly therefore, I would highly recommend this film to be rated 15+
Main characters • Main characters- • Young girl who witnessed her mother die- she has held a grudge against the man who supposedly killed her mother, her aim is to kill any man that she believes killed her mother. • The mother- she has faked her own death, and is an undercover spy. • A boy the Young girl grew up with- secretly loved her and is trying to convince her that she doesn’t need to kill anyone.
