  1. John Hancock By: Zachary Kuykendall

  2. Life • Was Born in Braintree Massachusetts. • Father died when John was a young boy. • John was then adopted by his uncle, who at the time was one of the richest men in the Americas. • When he was twenty eight his uncle died and John Hancock became the richest man in the colonies.

  3. Life cont. • Hancock used his money for many things, from personal gain, to freedom of America. • If it was not for his fortune, we may very well not have a United States of America.

  4. Major Accomplishments • President of the Continental congress 1775 • Boston Massacre involvement • Signing the Declaration of Independance

  5. President John Hancock • In 1775 John Hancock was the president of the second continental congress • Although he was only president for two years, he was in office long enough for many turbulent things: such as (most of)the revolutionary war, and the signing of the Declaration. • John Hancock was trusted to make, not only good, but great decisions during the country’s early times of peril and disaster.

  6. Boston Massacre • John Hancock unintentionally started the Boston Massacre. • When John Hancock refused to pay taxes on the wine that he had imported, England used it as a reason to move British troops back to Boston. • Hancock wasn’t trying to begin a fight, but he also should have just paid the tax.

  7. Signing the Declaration • John Hancock’s most important accomplishment was most likely when he signed the declaration. • He was the first man to sign, and his signature was the biggest. • He could have been arrested, imprisoned, and/or hung. • He risked more than just his name for the freedom of our country, he risked his life.

  8. Recap. • During his existence John Hancock did many great things like when he served as president of the continental congress, when he became involved with the Boston Massacre, and the time that he was the first man to sign the declaration of independence. As president of the continental congress, Hancock made monumental decisions that affected the momentum of the war. Also he started the Boston Massacre which helped in starting a revolution for our continent. Finally he became the first man to sign the declaration of independence which solidified our countries freedom.

  9. Best Hancock Quote • “I have the most animating confidence that the present noble struggle for liberty will terminate gloriously for America. And let us play the man four our God, and for the cities of our God; while we are using the means in our power, let us humbly commit our righteousness cause to the great lord of the universe, who loveth righteousness and hate iniquity.”
