Iris • This plant has a “bulb”. This feature serves as a food source when this species lies dormant in colder weather. It allows it to survive and bloom in the spring • This species is commonly found in gardens in the United States
Baobab Tree • The trunk of this tree is hollow inside and can store up to 120,000 liters of water. The bark is like cork and is fire resistant. The fruit is called “monkey bread” and has lots of Vitamin C. • This tree is native to Madagascar and can survive the constant droughts there.
Bee Orchid • The flower of this plant resembles or mimics a bee. Bees are attracted to the flower because they think it is a female bee. They then pollinate the flower. • These flowers live in Europe and Asia.
Saguaro Cactus • This tree like cactus can grow as tall as 70 feet. During rains the cactus will swell up and hold the water that it collects, to use slowly during times without rain. • This cactus grows in Saguaro Desert in Arizona and Northern Mexico.
Yucca • This plant has sharp hard leaves that help protect it against consumers. This plant also has flowers that bloom when there is enough rain so insects will pollinate it. • This plant grows in the deserts of the Trans Pecos Ecoregion (Big Bend).
