Our foundations • The Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) brings together the UK’s diverse and specialised scientific community who work across the health and care system including; NHS Trusts, NHS Blood and Transplant, Public Health England, independent healthcare organisations, and within the academic sector across the UK.

  4. Our ambition • The Academy’s ambition is to lead and inspire people working within Healthcare Science to make the maximum use of their talents and training to improve the lives of those people who rely upon the accuracy and quality of diagnosis and treatment to live the best life they can.

  5. Delivering our Ambition • The Academy will achieve our ambition by: • Facilitating the rapid diffusion of Scientific advances, innovations and new ways of working • Ensuring the next generation of trainees • Setting and monitoring standards of work that all should expect • Recognising and celebrating the contribution that Healthcare Science makes to the Health of the population

Establishing the register • Work to date • Shadow practitioner register established in June 13 • Initial stakeholder engagement and development on register standards • Timetable set out for an accredited practitioner register by Summer 2014 • Current activity • Preparing standards for consultation starting Dec 13 • Discussions with PSA and HCPC • Developing appropriate governance structures

Equivalence • Work to date • STP Principles, policies and early guidance established • Assessors recruited and trained • Equivalence piloted with Genetics STP • Current activity • Further development of STP equivalence processes with early implementers from CVRSGI&U • Developing Integrated Assessment Unit with ACS • PTP equivalence to follow STP equivalence model

  9. Scientific Leadership • Work to date • Professional Leadership Group established • Current activity • Ongoing development of leadership proposals and workplan for group

  10. PSQIP (Physical Sciences Quality Improvement Programme) • Work to date • Established partnership with IPEM • Set up steering group and recruited project lead • Current activity • Recruitment of members to standards group (IPEM) • Development of evidence and commentary to support the standards  • Work toward standards consultation by April 2014 • Develop invitation to tender for an accreditation provider

QA of Education and Training • Work to date • Granted Education Provider status by HCPC • AHCS Directors have taken part in accreditation events at universities to quality assure the processes carried out by HEE • Current activity • Develop a Quality Assurance framework, working co-operatively with NSHCS and HEE

Sharing information across healthcare science • Work to date • Established links across professional bodies • Revised and updated AHCS website (www.ahcs.ac.uk) • Set up regular Vox newsletter • Developed well-used social media channels (@AHCSuk and Facebook) • Current activity • Continue to develop and update news and other content • Develop events programme

Governance • The Academy for Healthcare Science is run by the profession, for the profession, with the profession • Our work is overseen by a Board and Council comprising representatives from across Healthcare Science • We set our work agenda and carry out commissioned projects for parts of the health and care system across the UK • As our work programme grows, we are evolving our governance structure to ensure that it can deliver the work of the Academy and remains responsive to our needs
