  1. Starter: Look at this picture think about who teaches you moral responsibilities? Has this affected your everyday life? Why?

THE BIBLE TEACHES CHRISTIANS … Title: Christian teachings on moral duty & responsibilities The Parable of the Sheep and the Goats Jesus taught through this story that God will at the end separate his people into those who helped others (the sheep) and those who have not (the goats). Christians have a duty to help those in need when they can. Matthew 25:31-46 The Golden RuleThis rule states “…do to others what you would have them do to you…” meaning treat others as they would wish to be treated. (Matthew 7:12) Am I my brother’s keeper?: St Paul St Paul taught Christians should not stand by and do nothing while others suffer. He used the example of Cain and Abel to warn Christians that they have moral duty to actively care for others. Cain killed his brother Abel then denied he had anything to do with it, saying it was not up to him to care for others.

  3. The 10 commandments The Commandments also stress the importance of moral duties. They include teachings such as ‘honour your parents’, ‘do not murder’ and do not steal’. Christians are expected to follow these rules in their everyday lives. (Exodus 20:2-17).

A woman is trapped in a tower block that has fire spreading towards her floor. She screams for help. No one comes! A wealthy man pretends to be poor and begs for money every Friday afternoon outside the Halifax bank.

Plenary What mark would you award this pupil? c) Christians believe they have a moral duty to help others. • Firstly the bible states that we should treat others how we want to be treated, this is know as the Golden Rule. • Secondly Christians are taught to have a duty to help those in need when they can. This is because Jesus taught the parable of the sheep and goats. This parable teaches Christians that God will separate his people into those who have helped others (sheep) and those who have not (goat). • Thirdly Christians should not stand by and do nothing while others suffer. This is because they have moral duty to actively care for others. Christians are told they should be their brothers keeper. St Paul used the story of Cain and Able, as Cain killed his brother then denied he had anything to do with it. • Finally, the 10 commandments also stress the importance of moral duties. This is because Christians are told to honour their parents, not murder, not steal. Christians are expected to follow these rules everyday.
