Essential Laboratory Skills Review for Regents Day 2: Measurements and Safety

DESCRIPTION

This review focuses on key laboratory skills necessary for the Regents exam, including accurate measurements and microscope usage. Students will learn to convert centimeters to millimeters by multiplying by 10 and how to measure liquid volumes using a graduated cylinder, focusing on the meniscus. The practice also covers microscope operation—starting on low power, using coarse and fine adjustments, and understanding diaphragm functions. Safety protocols for laboratory work, such as wearing goggles and gloves and careful handling of chemicals, are also emphasized.

  2. Regents Review Day 02 Laboratory Skills

  3. Measurements Review • Multiply cm by 10 to get mm (ex. 7cm x 10 = 70mm) • Measure the volume of liquids with a graduated cylinder. • Measure liquids from the middle of the meniscus (curve).

  4. Measurements Practice

  8. Measurements Practice

  9. Microscope • Start on low power because it has a larger field of vision, then zoom in to the center of the field with high power.

  10. Microscope • Coarse adjustment – brings the image into focus • Fine adjustment – sharpens the image

  11. Microscope • Diaphragm – lets in more light and makes the image brighter • Total magnification = eyepiece (ocular) x objective

  12. Lab Safety • Wear goggles • Wear gloves • Do not drink chemicals • Handle chemicals and glass with care • Do not touch hot objects or fire

  13. Homework #35 R.B. p 162-163, #1, 3, 9, 11 (full answers only)
