Equivalent Inequalities • Just as you used properties of equality, you can use properties of inequality. • Equivalent inequalities are inequalities that have the same solutions.
Addition and Subtraction Properties of Inequality • If a < b • a + c < b + c • a - c < b - c • If a > b • a + c > b + c • a - c > b - c
Examples • x – 15 > -12 • x – 15 + 15 > -12 + 15 • x > 3 • t + 6 > - 4
Writing and Solving • A school bus can carry as many as 76 students. If 19 are already on the bus, how many more can board? • Subtract 19 : s ≤ 57 • At most, 57 more students can board the bus.
