Setting Up Your iDEN Phone as a Modem Windows 95/98/Me
Requirements • In order to connect your phone to your Windows 95/98/Mecomputer, you must have the following: • A “Plus” series (i700plus, i1000plus, i550plus, etc.) or a SIM based iDEN phone (i90c, i95cl, i85s, i58sr, i60c, i30sx, etc.) • Your phone is provisioned for Wireless Data services through your service provider. • Data cable • - SIM based phones: part number NKN6544 • - iDEN “Plus” phones: part number NKN6522 • - USB data cable NNTN4007 (Note: USB data cable is only supported on Windows 98 Second Edition) • Note: Data cables can be purchased through the Motorola Online store at www.idenstore.com or through your local authorized sales office.
Installation of your Data cable If you are installing a serial data cable (NKN6544/NKN6522), connect your data cable and phone to the PC or laptop and power on the PC to continue. If you are installing the USB cable (NNTN4007) on Windows 98 Second Edition, it is recommended that you download and install the Packet Data applet on our website at www.motorola.com/iden and install the software application first before connecting the USB cable to your PC.
Installation on Windows 95/98/Me • To start the installation process: • Click on Start and select Control Panel • From the Control Panel, double-click on Modems to continue.
Installation on Windows 95/98/Me From the Modems Properties window, click the Add button to begin the modem setup process.
Installation on Windows 95/98/Me If you are using a Laptop. The first Window that will appear will ask you to select either PCMCIA or other. Please select Other. Click on next to continue. Follow the directions for Desktop.
Installation on Windows 95/98/Me From the Install New Modem window, put a check in the box next to Don’t detect my modem; I will select from a list. Click Next to continue.
Installation on Windows 95/98/Me On the next Install New Modem screen, please select (Standard Modem Types) under the Manufacturers listing and Standard 19200 bps Modem under the Models list. Once you have selected these options, click Next to continue.
Installation on Windows 95/98/Me Select a communications port you would like to use to communicate with your iDEN modem. Click Next to continue.
Installation on Windows 95/98/Me Upon completion of the modem setup, Windows will give you a set up successful message. Click Finish to complete this task.
Setting up a Dial Up Connection using Windows 95/98/Me In order to dial in or connect to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or a network, you must create a dial up connection. To create a dial up connection, go to My Computer and double-click on Dial Up Networking.

Setting up a Dial Up Connection using Windows 95/98/Me From this next screen, create a name for the modem connection (iDEN Modem). Now under Select a modem, choose the modem that you just created for the iDEN phone connection. Click Next to continue.
Setting up a Dial Up Connection using Windows 95/98/Me On the next screen, if you are creating a circuit data connection (dialing a phone number of an Internet Service Provider) you will enter the access number of the ISP here, including any area or country codes (if necessary). If you are creating a packet data connection (connecting with your cellular company’s packet data network), enter S=2 in the Telephone number location. Click Next to Continue. Making a connection with your iDEN Phone To start your connection, power on your iDEN phone and wait until it connects to the service provider. Once it connects, connect the phone to the data cable (your data cable should already by connected to your PC). Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to Communications, and then click Dial-Up Networking . Double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon that you created. In the Connect To dialog box, type your user name and password, and then click Connect. Your phone should display Setting up Connection and then Connected.
Troubleshooting with HyperTerminal One way to troubleshoot a modem connection is with HyperTerminal and AT commands. To access HyperTerminal on your PC: Go to Start/Programs/Accessories/Communications/HyperTerminal When the connection description window appears, select a name for the connection you are making then click OK to continue.
Troubleshooting with HyperTerminal From the Connect to window, select your COM port under Connect using (COM 1 is usually the default). Click OK. On the COM properties window, go to the Bits per second option and select 19200 and click OK to continue.
Troubleshooting with HyperTerminal There are a few initial commands you can use to check the connection of your PC to your iDEN Phone: ATI1 This command shows the modem model ATI2 This command displays the software version of your phone. ATI3 This command will display the build date of the phone. ATI4 This command displays the modem manufacturer. Using these commands enables you to check the hardware connection between the phone and PC. If you receive positive messages (OK), the connection is working properly.
Troubleshooting with HyperTerminal Another way you can use HyperTerminal is to check if you can connect with either Packet or Circuit Data: ATD (plus Number of ISP) This command will show you if the unit can make a Circuit Data call. ATDS=2 This command will show you if the unit can make a Packet Data call. Using this AT command can determine if you can connect to the ISP or the packet data network successfully. If you cannot connect, please contact your phone service provider to determine if your phone has been provisioned correctly.
