  4. Subordinate Conjunctions Brainstorm • List as many subordinate conjunctions as you can.

  5. Subordinating Clauses • A subordinating conjunction joins a subordinate clause to a main clause. • They are sometimes called dependent clausesbecause they "depend" on a main clause to give them meaning. Example • Because I cannot go to the play, my sister is using my ticket.

  6. Clauses • An adverb clause is always introduced by a subordinating conjunction. A noun clause and adjective clause sometimes are. • Adverb clause: Before you go, sign the log book. • Noun clause: He asked if he could leave early. • Adjective clause: That is the place where he was last seen.

  8. Example Poem (I do) Whenever I get up, After the alarm clock has gone off, Before the sun comes up, As I stumble to the shower, I slowly get ready for my day of school. When I arrive at school, As I am talking to my friends, Before classes begin, While I do my work, I long to be back in my cozy bed.

  10. Grammar Poem (Ya’ll do) • With a partner, follow the guidelines to write a grammar poem. • Share your poem with another pair.

Guidelines for Poem • 2 stanzas of 5 lines each • The first 4 lines should begin with a word from your brainstorm list and cannot be a complete sentence. • The last line of the stanza cannot begin with a subordinator and MUST be a complete sentence. • Capitalize the first word of each line • The first 4 lines are punctuated with a comma, and the last line is punctuated with a period. • Sentence Order Subordinator – Subject– Verb

  12. Exit Slip (You do) • 3-2-1 • Three types of clauses that subordinators can introduce • Two subordinators from your brainstorm list. • One original sentence that begins with a subordinate clause.
