  2. Location • Big Horn country in south central MT. • Three mountainous areas with plains and valleys. • Rivers and soil provide vegetation cover.

  3. History • Ancestors settled in N. & S. Dakota. • Lived in semi-permanent villages of lodges and teepees. • Matrilineal society of hunters. • 400 years ago broke into two groups; the Hidatsa remained in the Dakotas; the Apsaalooke (Crow) claimed eastern MT.

  4. 1825 signed a treaty of friendship with U.S. government. • 1851 Fort Laramie established reservation land; 1868, 1882, 1890, and 1905 further reduced land. • Crow feel government failed to give proper compensation for land.

  5. 1920 land was divided by every member. • 1948 Crow created a democratic constitution. • All adults vote for councils.

  6. Crow today • Housing conditions are poor; 75% are substandard; 2,500 homes are needed. • Crow children attend public school. • 60-80% unemployment; economy consists of government services, farming, and ranching.

  7. August is the Crow Fair Celebration and Powwow. • 500 teepees are set up. • “Teepee capital of the world.”
