  1. Digital Book Trailers Region 10 16th Annual Technology Planning Conference Vicky Selznick Lowery Freshman Center Allen ISD Robin Screen Ford Middle School Allen ISD May 11, 2010

  2. Steps to Build Your Book Trailer Select your book! 2. Create a folder on your desktop or in your flash drive to save all your components (image and audio files, etc.)

  3. Steps to Build Your Book Trailer • Select appropriate/relevant images • Book cover (we recommend any of the following sites for images): www.titlewave.com (Follett) www.mackin.com www.amazon.com www.barnesandnoble.com Develop a game plan that empowers your vision; how will you engage your viewers with the storyline?

  4. Steps to Build Your Book Trailer • Images (continued) • “A picture’s worth a thousand words.” • Use Creative Commons for your pictures; you need to give credit through attributions. • www.creativecommons.org • (Note: You do not need to make an account!) • Click on the Find option • “I want something that I can…(unclick use for commercial purposes)”

  5. Steps to Build Your Book Trailer 3. Images (continued) • Begin your search for pictures. • Click on Flickr (other image-friendly sites are commons.wikimedia and google images; however, the attributions are not as obvious) • Search for image • Save picture to your folder (change the file name to something simpler and more recognizable; save as jpg format)

  6. Steps to Build Your Book Trailer 3. Images (continued) • After saving picture, scroll down on the right side of the screen until you come to “some rights reserved” – click on it to check if you can use the image • In the section “under the following conditions” right click and copy the attribution (everything in the “attribute this work” box) • Paste the attribution into your attribution ppt slide (delete nonessential text shown –see next slide in red for the actual book trailer credits at the end of the movie

  7. Steps to Build Your Book Trailer 3. Images (continued) <div xmlns:cc="http://creativecommons.org/ns#" about="http://www.flickr.com/photos/cobalt/292888228/"><a rel="cc:attributionURL" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/cobalt/">http://www.flickr.com/photos/cobalt/</a> / <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.0/">CC BY-NC 2.0</a></div> Note: The section that is copied and pasted into your credits is actually the URL of the image. It is necessary to check for this attribution in order to know what rights you have in regards to the image use.

  8. Steps to Build Your Book Trailer 4. Audio files • Once you have collected your images, it is time to collect audio: • We recommend jamendo (in Creative Commons), ccMixter.org and freesound.org • Choose music genre from the tag cloud on the right side of the screen or search for related subject • Preview choices; when you decide on one, click on it and check “your rights on this album” and if it’s okay to use, copy and paste the link to this album along with the artist’s name into your attribution slide

  9. Simple Rules of Creating Book Trailers…. • Keep it SIMPLE – Not a lot of text!! • Watch your images!! Look at how text would be seen ON the slide (i.e. too many colors on an image, contrast, font size and type) • Keep the transitions and effects TO A MINIMUM – don’t keep switching…no more than 2-3 throughout the trailer is usually enough!! • Watch television commercials…learn from the experts!!

  10. Sources for Making the Book Trailers www.animoto.com • “Turn your photos & videos into pure amazing. • Animoto automatically produces beautifully orchestrated, completely unique video pieces from your photos, video clips and music. Fast, free and shockingly easy.”
