  1. Today’s Warm up • ROAR Buck Time! What THREE things go into the introduction paragraph? • Also…we will be taking notes on SOME of these slides. Add them to your Daily File. Label it with today’s date, Thurs, 5/9.

  2. Interestingly enough… The conclusion paragraph will also likely have 3 parts: • Re-state the thesis sentence. • Transition to the general topic. • End with a memorable close.

  3. What goes into the conclusion? Turn the triangle right-side up to get a visual of the conclusion. Restate your narrow thesis. Broaden the topic out. Make it more general. End with a memorable close

  4. A sample conclusion Chocolate is indeed one of the world’s greatest foods for many reasons. The rich taste, availability, and health benefits make it a true culinary miracle. Chocolate. It will always have first place on my taste buds and in my heart.

  5. Hmmm…look at the introduction The cares of the world disappear for a short time as the rich dark silk slides down my throat. Even if the day has been purely dreadful, chocolate can instantaneously make everything better. Chocolate is the world’s most perfect food because it tastes incredible, is very easy to obtain, and even has some health benefits. Question: How does it compare to the concluding paragraph?

  6. Your Turn! • Using the SAME topic that you used for your introduction paragraph, “flip it upside down” and write an appropriate concluding paragraph! • Also, COPY AND PASTE your introduction paragraph above your concluding paragraph. Label which is which. • Remember: It includes all the same parts, although they are probably slightly reworded and have a different order. • You will have FIVE minutes to do this before we check in.

  7. Peer Edit • Read through your peer’s paragraph to see what it is about. • UNDERNEATH the paragraph, number 1-4. • Get ready to read the paragraph again so that you can answer the questions on the following slide.

  8. Check-in Answer each of the of the following questions for your peer’s paragraph: • Does s/he restate the thesis (including the two examples/subtopics) in the first sentence of the paragraph? Yes No • Is there a slightly more specific SECOND sentence that names the topic, but not all of the reasons? Yes No • Does s/he end the paragraph with a general, memorable statement that relates to the topic, but does not state it specifically? Yes No • Is the paragraph FREE of personal pronouns? Yes No

  9. I feel like I’m following a recipe. • As you are working to strengthen your academic writing, it may feel like this is too much of a formula. • As you improve, you will be ready to make more variations. You will find ways in which to show your personality strongly through the structure. Give it some time!
