  4. STRATEGY: summarize To summarize nonfiction, you first locate the main idea and important details. You then retell them in your own words Summarizing can help you understand and remember text that has description and structure.

SKILL: description • Nonfiction articles that give us information about a topic often have a text structure called description. • In description, the author uses examples and details to identify characteristics and qualities that describe the topic • Look for signal words that tell us that a list, or set of, characteristics is coming up; • Most important, for example, to begin with, first, and in fact

  6. PREVIEW & PREDICT When I say “Go”, take 1 minute to preview the illustrations. Ask yourself: • Will this selection be about real animals and their homes? On your index card, write what you think this selection is about. After we listen to the story, we will check your predictions.
