The Reading Process • A three-part process that you do all the time (whether you know it or not). • As we review this, think of other activities in which you use some of these steps. • We’ll discuss these at the end!
Part 1: Prereading • Purpose • Prior Knowledge • Preview – Predict • Interest • Focus
Part 2: Reading • ID main ideas, details, organizational patterns • Predictions - right or revise? • Reading rate - adjust as needed to understand text and based on difficulty of text, prior knowledge and subject. • Connections • But wait, there’s more!
Part 2: Reading (cont.) • Fix-It strategies for tough text • Questions - ask yourself questions about the text • Writer's Intent - Read between the lines
Part 3: Explore/Extend • Purpose - did you accomplish it? • Understanding - confirm understanding • Evaluate - bias, accuracy, quality • Extend your thinking - use ideas you saw in text
