  2. Politics In the aftermath of the Mexican War, Texas leaders had many issues to face. Texas citizens clamored for protection from Indians. The state had debt to pay off. As the state grew, it also needed to pay for the construction of new railroads, schools and a capitol. Aftermath -- something that results or follows from an event.

  3. Governors • George T. Wood took office as governor in 1847. Wood had served with distinction in the Mexican War. George T. Wood tried to find a way to find a way to pay off the state’s debt. He also worked to defend the frontier and end a border dispute with New Mexico. His failure to settle the border dispute was one of the reasons he lost his bid for reelection. Wood lost to Peter H. Bell , who severed two terms. Bell, in turn, was followed by Elisha M. Pease in 1853
