  1. Improved security for commercial container transports using an innovative active RFID system Justin Jacobs PUBP 716 September 22, 2014

  2. European commissionjoint research centre (JRC) • Paper analyzes current container seal technologies • R&D of new RFID technologies to improve security and logistics chain competitiveness • New (2011) RFID system uses both active and passive RFID systems

  3. Containers • Design unchanged over last 40 years • Security considerations • Vulnerability to tampering

  4. Container statistics • 2011 - 66% of world general cargo was moved in containers • 2012 - container port throughput - 601 million TEUs (UN Conference on Trade and Development) • 2014 – 17.8 million TEUs in global containership fleet with 3.6 million on orderbooks

  5. Container issues • How do you track so many containers? • How do shippers, buyers, liner operators ensure security and integrity of the container? • How do you stop theft, tampering, etc.?

  6. Traditional solutions • Two traditional solutions: • On board detection systems to register door openings • Mechanical seals

  7. Rfid solution • RFID – Radio Frequency Identification Device • The capabilities of RFID systems: • contact-less reading • information storage • remote control

  8. E-Seals • e-Seals or RFID seals can use passive, active, or mixed technologies • Internal memory chips • On-the-fly inspections • Reduce human error

  9. Jrc seal

  10. Smart container logistics

  11. Paper conclusions • Combination of active and passive systems increased security and container integrity • Battery life = 1 year • €50 per unit • Possibility to check the seal status, by remote interrogation of the electronic card memory
