  2. Welcome On behalf of our team at Apache Youth Ministries, I want to thank you for your interest in serving alongside us on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation this summer. It is always a joy and an honor to host teams from around the country as we work together to make Christ known in this place. Thank you for your heart to advance the Gospel and your willingnessto give your time and resources to do so. I’m excited for what lies ahead.   3. Overview of Fort Apache Reservation Population: Less than 15,000 Age: 50% under 25 Land: 1.4 million acres Altitude: 4000 -11,400 ft

  4. Statistics • Over 70% unemployment • $14,000 median income • 60% below the poverty line • Suicide rate 13x higher than national rate • 2nd worst violent crime rate of all U.S. reservations • Estimated 40-50% girls sexually abused by age 13

  5. What We Do Engage Educate Empower

  6. ENGAGE (outreach) • The Kennel – Our youth center within walking distance of Alchesay High School • Basketball – Most popular sport on the reservation. We host two weeklong camps a year • Misc. – Throughout the year we do service projects, volunteer, help coach, tutor, substitute teach, anything to reach out to youth.

  7. EDUCATE (disciple) • The Rising – Our Thursday night youth group. Average attendance of 70-100 • Small Groups – Meets on Tuesday nights. Meal and study. • Retreats – One in the fall and spring, involves youth groups from neighboring reservations

  8. EMPOWER • Little Bluebird Studios – T-shirt shop used to employ locals. Profits help fund ministry • Homes for Hope – Some kids live in exceedingly hostile environments at home. Homes for Hope is a program to help place these kids in Christian homes throughout the country.

  9. Short Term Missions Philosophy 1. Humility • Realize dependence on God in everything • All of our service projects are in support of those who serve the community full time and include the following: • Schools • Hospitals • Ministries • Public health organizations • Etc… 2. Flexibility • In our experience if something can go wrong, it will. Every year we meet obstacles that require flexibility. Adapt, Modify, and Overcome. That’s the mantra. 3. Expectation • “According to your faith will it be done to you.” – Matthew 9:29 • When we step out in faith we can expect to witness the glory of God. • Those who listen hear; those who seek find. • Every year we see God move powerfully in and through the lives of those who come to serve.

Basic Schedule • Saturday • Arrive • Setup Camp • Attend Church (if possible) • Sunday • AYM Orientation • Local church • Reservation Orientation • Prayer Walk • Preparation • Apache Meal • Mon.-Wed. • Devos • Breakfast • Service Project • Lunch • Cultural Engagement • Free Time • Dinner • Evening Activities (worship and debriefing) • Thursday • Devos • Breakfast • Challenge • Free Time • Dinner • Evening Activities • Friday • Free Day (determined by team) • Saturday • Depart

Evolutions (activities) SERVICE PROJECTS • May include but not limited to: • Maintenance projects • Construction projects • Firewood cutting/gathering • Painting • Cleaning • Etc… • May include but not limited to: • VBS (determined by team) • Tour of historical sites • Hike with AYM students • Boys and Girls Club • Elderly Centers • Basketball tournaments • Etc… CULTURAL/RELATIONAL

Costs • Fixed (paid to AYM) • Lodging: TBA • Project: $150/person • Estimated (provided by team) • Food: $1,000/20 people • Van Rentals: $800/van • Gas: TBD by team • Free Day: TBD by team • *Each team is responsible for food and transportation. • *Some costs vary based on the group. Rates provided are average estimates and meant to be used as a guide. All teams are expected to accurately estimate their own needs. • *Lodging rates will be announced in February or March as soon as we are notified by school.

What to Expect… WEATHER • June-July • hot and sunny during the day • daytime temps: 70-95 • nighttime temps: 60-70 • July-August • hot and sunny during day • rainy in the afternoon • daytime temps: 70-85 • Nighttime temps: 60-70 • ***Arizona has an extremely dry climate and additionally our reservation is in a high altitude environment (4500 – 9000 ft above sea level). Therefore, hydration is essential. Come prepared.*** • Due to the altitude, physical activities will be slightly more strenuous. Any physical preparation you can do beforehand will be beneficial.
