Pennsylvania: • 1680: William Penn (Quaker) receives a land grant from King Charles II (owed Penn’s father $$$). • He intends to use this land as a refuge for the Quakers who were persecuted in England. • “Holy Experiment”: Name given to Pennsylvania by Penn. • The Quakers believed that religion was based on personal experience and people were guided by an inner light.

  3. Quakers objected to all political and religious authority and advocated pacifism (opposition to war and violence). • Penn regarded the treatment of Natives as unjust and he will establish a peaceful coexistence for the next 70 years. • Penn establishes the city of Philadelphia (City of Brotherly Love). • Penn will also purchase 3 counties south of Philadelphia. This territory will become Delaware.

North Carolina: • King Charles II granted large areas of land south of VA to his friends and political allies. • The land becomes known as the Carolina’s. • Territory grew slowly and the population was scattered. • 1650: Farmers from other territories begin to move to NC and grew tobacco. • NC has poor ports/harbors because of the Outer Banks. • Farmers export naval supplies such as pitch, turpentine, and tar. (Tar Heels).

  6. South Carolina: • Early settlers felt that the geography was suitable to grow sugarcane (Not suitable). • Rice becomes the Major cash crop. • Charles Town will be the main port and city. (named for King Charles II).

  7. Georgia: • James Oglethorpe: Received a charter from King George II to establish colony south of Carolina’s. • The colony was a refuge for English debtors to start over rather than be imprisoned for their debts. • Why establish Georgia? • Help the poor Englishmen. • Served as a buffer between the English colonies and Spanish Florida.
