  2. Objectives • What medication is adherence and why is it important • To address some common questions about taking medications • To give tips and suggestions for making it easier to take your medications

  3. What is Medication Adherence? • Taking your medication every day, as prescribed • Getting your refills on time • Keeping doctor’s appointments to monitor progress and address concerns

  4. Know Your Medications • “What is this medication for? I don’t feel sick!” • Many medications are used for their long-term health benefits • You may not feel different, but your doctor can tell you if they are working

  5. Side Effects • “I didn’t feel sick before, now this medication is making me feel horrible.” • Some side effects and reactions can be serious. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about what you should be looking for. • Most side effects are temporary and will go away once your body gets used to the new medication.

  6. Multiple Medications • “I take so many! How can I possibly keep it all straight?” • Pill boxes: daily, weekly, monthly • Medication Log • Timers and/or alarms to help you remember

  7. Easy Access • “I can’t see the label or even open the bottle! I can’t even take it if I tried!” • Magnifying glasses or print outs • Easy open caps

  8. Generic Medications • “Generic? Is it the same thing? I want it to work!” • They are carefully tested to make sure they work the same as the brand name • More companies can make them – they compete for the lowest price and can save you money

  9. Medication Expenses • “I can’t afford all these!” • Some medications are not available as a generic • Sample medications from doctor • Discount and voucher programs • Potentially switch insurance plans if not adequately covered • Pharmacists can help choose the right plan for you!

  10. Information is Key! • “I’ve never taken this before, what do I do?” • Your pharmacist can tell you important information in 5 minutes or less • We’re just a phone call away
