Subsistence agriculture occurs when farmers grow food crops to meet the needs of themselves and their families. In subsistence agriculture, farm output is targeted to survival and is mostly for local requirements with little or no surplus.

What is Subsistence Farming • Form of Farming. • All, or nearly all, livestock and crops are kept to use by farmer. • Historically, people would move from place to place and farm. • Modern farming has replaced this method. • Products not sold.
Methods of Farming • Part of subsistence farming is using the littlest space to produce the most. • Different methods used to acquire such a goal. • There beds a tiered garden beds:- • They utilize a hilled area that would otherwise be difficult to farm. • Water uses gravity to travel between garden beds.
Agriculture Terms to Know • Agriculture- growing plants or raising animals to produce food for sustenance (subsistence farming) or sale at market place. • Hunters and gatherers- nomadic people who do not remain stationary but follow herds of wild animals and forage plants for survival. • Subsistence agriculture- farmers grow enough food to feed their families. Primarily found in the periphery areas of Africa and Asia. • Commercial farming- farms produce food to be sold in groceries and markets. This primarily found in more developed countries.
Advantages & Disadvantages of Subsistence farming • Advantages of subsistence farming. • The level of production is very low, intended to feed only the family. • The farm activity is mainly on personal or family lands held by individuals therefore the farmers are unable to produce much. • Disadvantages of subsistence farming. • Produces just enough for the consumption of the family and nothing left for sale and garner income. • Is highly dependent upon rainfall as modern irrigation methods are unsuitable for such small farm sizes.
