  2. HOWWASFRANCE INTHE PAST? • France is a country of history. It took a long time before becoming the country we know today. • In the past, there were many wars and conquests that reduced or enlarged the boundaries of France.

  3. LES ROMAINS ET LES GAULOIS • When Caesar was the Emperor, France was called ‘la Gaule’ and the territory was bigger than today, a part of Germany and Belgium was in it. Caesar was in war against la Gaule and wanted to conquer it. Then, La gaule became Roman. • You may know the famous French comics ASTERIX which relates that fight between the Gaulois and les Romains.

  4. LE MOYEN AGE • The Middle-Age was a time of conquests and war. During the 8th century, France was a Royaume, bigger than it is nowadays. • During the 13th century, the German and the English empires had some parts of France. L’Aquitaine was English and the north and south–east were German. • Clovis,Charlemagne and Jeanne d’Arc were living during this period and played a big part in French history.

  7. Jeanne d’Arc (1412-1431) • Issue d’unefamille de paysan et trèspieuse. • Elle a repondu a un appeldivin et s’estbattu pour libérer le pays des anglais.   8. LE TEMPS DES ROIS • France was run by many Kings in the past. They were very rich and had many castles, they were always with their Court. • The last king was Louis 16 who was beheaded at the end of the French revolution in 1792.

  9. Francois 1er (1494-1547) • Roi emblématique de la Renaissance française. • Il a favorisé l’art de la Renaissance avec la construction de demeures royales (Blois, Chambord, Fontainebleau) • Nombreuses tensions avec Henry VIII.

LE ROI SOLEIL • He is known as The Sun King (in French Le Roi Soleil) because it was thought that, just as the planets revolve around the Sun, so too should France and the Court revolve around him. • He built his own castle : le Château de Versailles. There are 2000 rooms, all with many paintings, masterpieces of art and very expensive furniture. With 67 000m2, the castle is a big as 10 football pitches. • His royal dress was made in gold, as many things in the castle. • Les rois de France, Louis XV et Louis XVI lived in that castle too.

  15. Louis XVI (1754-1793) • Dernier roi de la Monarchie absolue française. • Il meurt guillotiné suite à la Révolution française et la prise de la Bastille du 14 juillet 1789.

Napoléon 1er-Bonaparte (1769-1821) • Empereur et génie militaire, il a régné sur l'Europe • Célèbre pour son habileté militaire et politique mais aussi pour son régime autoritaire. • Nombreuses campagnes qui ont cause des milliers de morts. • La bataille de Waterloo-1815 met fin a son empire. • Il meurt en exil

  18. NAPOLEON • When Napoléon was the Empire of France, France had gained many territories. • In 1810, France got a huge Empire with 130 states and 70 millions of unhabitants, only 30 millions being French.
