    2. What is it? Adobe Photoshop is a powerful tool for creating and editing both print and digital images.

Class 1 Layers Layers are like pieces of transparency stacked on top of one another with each one having a portion of the image on it The layers palette lists these layers in order from top to bottom. For instance anything on Layer 1 on the next slide would appear on top of anything on the Background layer

    24. Class 1 Add layer styles to your Happy Easter message Choose the layer styles icon from the bottom of the layers palette and play with all of the options. You can apply layer effects to any layer you wish.

Photo Retouching - Class 2 Color Replacement replace the color in an area of your image Select an area of your image with a selection tool Image>Adjustments>Replace Color Use left-most eyedropper to choose a single color, the middle one to add colors and the right-most to subtract colors Fuzziness level controls the degree to which colors are included Change the Hue, Saturation and Lightness to create replacement color

Photo Retouching - Class 2 Dodge Tool lighten areas of your image Choose the dodge tool from the toolbox Determine a brush size, range (highlights, midtones or shadows) and exposure (how light you want it to be with each swipe) from the tool options bar Drag over area of image you wish to lighten

Photo Retouching - Class 2 Sponge Tool saturates color Choose the sponge tool from the toolbox (may be hidden under the dodge tool) Determine a brush size, mode (saturate or desaturate) and flow (how much effect you want with each swipe) from the tool options bar Drag over area of image you wish to change

Photo Retouching - Class 2 Unsharp Mask Filter sharpens by adjustments in pixel contrast rather than determining edges Filter>Sharpen>Unsharp Mask Use Amount, Radius and Threshold sliders to get the desired effect Make sure the preview checkbox is chosen so you can see changes before accepting them

Photo Retouching - Class 2 Clone Stamp Tool uses pixels from one area of an image to replace pixels from another area Choose the Clone Stamp tool from the toolbox Determine a brush size, mode (many to choose from), opacity and flow (how much effect you want with each swipe) from the tool options bar Alt Click where you want to sample from (a target will appear on the screen) Release Alt and drag over the area you wish to correct

Photo Retouching - Class 2 Alignment and the Clone Stamp Tool Alignment is a check box in the tool options bar Checking alignment makes the tool continuously sample pixels while you work maintaining a constant distance from the position where you first sampled. When alignment is not checked, the tool continues to use the original area sampled again and again.

Photo Retouching - Class 2 Healing Brush paints with sampled pixels while matching lighting, shading and texture of the pixels being replaced Choose the healing brush (band aid icon) from the toolbox Determine a brush size, mode and whether you want to sample your replacement pixels or use a pattern Alt click to sample (a target will appear) Drag over area you wish to change Alignment for this tool carries the same explaination as that for the Clone Stamp Tool

Photo Retouching - Class 2 Patch Tool replaces a selected area with sampled pixels while matching lighting, shading and texture of the pixels being replaced Choose the Patch Tool (may be behind the Healing Brush Tool) from the toolbox Box icons in the tool options bar allow you to choose a new selection or add, subtract or intersect with an existing one Encirle the area of the image you wish to repair Drag the circle to the area of the replacement pixels

Class 3 Magic Wand selects an area of an image by color Choose the Magic Wand Tool from the toolbox Box icons in the tool options bar allow you to choose a new selection or add, subtract or intersect with an existing one Tolerance determines how many color tones are selected Click to select Shift click to add to selection Alt click to subtract from selection

Class 3 Marquee Tool selects an area of an image in rectangles, ellipses or single lines Choose the Marquee Tool from the toolbar Box icons in the tool options bar allow you to choose a new selection or add, subtract or intersect with an existing one Feathering blurs the edges of the selection Click and drag to create a selection box To adjust position of selection area, depress spacebar without releasing mouse When using the ellipse, press shift to produce a perfect circle or Alt to draw from center

Class 3 Lasso Tool allows you to select by drawing around an image Choose the Lasso Tool from the toolbar Box icons in the tool options bar allow you to choose a new selection or add, subtract or intersect with an existing one Feathering blurs the edges of the selection Click and trace area to be selected without letting go of mouse button If your selection is not a closed area, Photoshop will draw a straight line from the point at which you release the mouse to your beginning point

Class 3 Polygonal Lasso Tool allows you to select by drawing around an image with fastening points Choose the Polygonal Lasso Tool from the toolbar Box icons in the tool options bar allow you to choose a new selection or add, subtract or intersect with an existing one Feathering blurs the edges of the selection Click to set fastening points around the area to be selected Double clicking before the selection is closed will draw a straight line from the point at which you double click to your first fastening point Toggle between Lasso and Poly Lasso by holding down Alt and letting go of the mouse and vice versa

Class 3 Magnetic Lasso Tool allows you to select by drawing around an image automatically snaps to high contrast edges Choose the Magnetic Lasso Tool from the toolbar Box icons in the tool options bar allow you to choose a new selection or add, subtract or intersect with an existing one Feathering blurs the edges of the selection Click and drag along edge to set random fastening points Double clicking before the selection is closed will draw a straight line from the point at which you double click to your first fastening point You can create your own fastening points by clicking Pressing delete key removes fastening points in reverse order

Class 3 Once a selection is made Cut it out Move it away with the move tool Edit>Cut Ctrl+X Copy it Edit>Copy Ctrl+C Alt+Move Tool Adjust position with arrow keys Arrow key moves selection one pixel at a time Shift+arrow moves selection 10 pixels at a time If marching ants (selection border) distracts you Ctrl+H toggles them on and off View>Show Selection Edges

    45. Class 4 Create a new document 300 pixels square 200 ppi resolution Name it Painting

    46. Class 4 Choose a sky color by clicking on the foreground color and using the color picker Use the paint bucket to make the background blue

    47. Class 4 Create white clouds in the sky using the custom shape tool Use the black cloud from the dropdown the other cloud creates an outline with no fill color

    48. Class 4 Click on the brush tool It may be hidden under the pencil Create a new layer Make the appropriate selections in the tool options bar to draw a tree trunk and limbs

    49. Class 4 In the lower left hand corner of the screen draw a tree Create a tree trunk Make lines straight by holding the shift key Create fillable areas by creating closed shapes Freehand branches but dont worry about leaves at this point

    50. Class 4 On the lower right hand side draw a house Create straight lines by clicking a point, holding down the shift key and clicking another point Fill in your closed shapes so your house has color

    51. Class 4 Weve changed our mind about where the house should go Select the house (Hold down Ctrl while you click on the layer in the layers palette) and move it higher in the composition using the move tool Do the same with the tree

    52. Class 4 Click on the brush dropdown from the tool options bar Click on the small arrow in the upper right hand corner and choose large list from the dropdown Choose the grass brush from the brush choices

    53. Class 4 Run cursor into image to see size, adjust size with slider in brush dropdown Click on the foreground color to choose a grassy green Create a new layer and drag grass in front of the tree and house to cover the ground

    54. Class 4 Because brushes are sometimes hard to control, using the history brush tool can be helpful Click on the action in your history palette before you drew anything with the brush (should be new layer) Your grass should be gone

    55. Class 4 Now click the camera icon in the history palette a thumbnail of your current drawing appears at the top with snapshot 1 by it Make sure the brush tool is chosen and that you are on your grass layer and redraw your grass Choose Multiply from the Mode dropdown in the Tool Options Bar this makes the grass get darker as you brush over it multiple times

    56. Class 4 Click on the History Brush in the toolbar The History Brush will return any missteps with the brush back to the way it was in snapshot 1

    57. Class 4 Click on the Pencil Tool (under the brush) Choose hard round 1 pixel from the tool options bar Create a new layer and draw lines on the tree that resemble tree bark texture Choose the blur tool and soften the lines as you see fit

    58. Class 4 We want to put leaves on the tree but the only leaf in the library is a maple we need to create a custom brush Go to the Internet and find a picture of an oak leaf with which to make a pattern. With the image open in Photoshop choose Edit>Define Brush. Choose a name for your brush and click OK.

    59. Class 4 Click on the Brushes palette is your palette well. Make adjustments to your brush. You will see the effects of your changes in the window at the bottom. When you are satisfied, create a new layer and put your leaves on your tree. You may want to make a new snapshot in the history palette before you begin. Get rid of unwanted leaves by using the eraser or history brush
