  2. Peru Facts & Figures Population – 29,549,517 Capital – Lima Language – Spanish, Quechua, and Asmara Religion – Roman Catholic, and Evangelical Land area: 494,208 square miles

  3. Location Peru is located on the continent of South America. It is bordered by Bolivia, Brazil, and Chile to the east and south; the Pacific Ocean to the west and Colombia and Ecuador to the north.

  4. Landforms Some landforms in Peru are : Andes Mountains - they cover most of the country. Amazon River - it is located in the lowest part of Peru. Here the country is mostly fertile land and jungles. Cotahuasi Canyon – it is considered to the deepest canyon in the Americas. At 3535 meters long and 335 meters deep.

  5. Government Peru’s government is a Constitutional Republic . This means that they have a president and a prime minister. President: OllantaHumala Prime Minister: Juan Jiménez

  6. Economy Peru’s currency is the Peruvian Nuevo Sol. Peru’s economy has dropped 23% since 2002. Most of Peru's exports go to the US, Canada, Singapore, China, Korea, Mexico, and Japan. Peru’s major exports are gold, zinc, copper, plastics & computer accessories.

  7. Tourist Attraction #1 Machu Picchu Machu Picchu also known as the “Lost City of the Incas”. Was unknown to the world before being discovered in 1911 by historian Hiram. Machu Picchu is invisible from the Urubamba Valley below and is surrounded by agricultural terraces and natural springs. This helped the Incas to be able to live in this environment. No one knows to this day how the people died out. But many people say from disease.

  8. Tourist Attraction #2 Uros Islands Uros island are located on Lake Titicaca. The people that live there are the Uros (pre-Incan people) . These people use the reeds that grow on the island to build there homes, make boats, and even make their special reed flower tea. To make sure that the small island douse not sink the Uros people add reeds to the sides of the island every three months. There reeds root to the bottom of the river helping to keep the island a float.

  9. Tourist Attraction #3 Colca Canyon Colca Canyon is named for the Colca River that lies in the canyon. It is located in the Andes mountain range, in southern Peru. It is more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, but the canyon’s walls are not as steep. But why most people visit is to see the awesome sights of the Andean condors.

  10. Tourist Attraction #4 The Amazon River The Amazon River is over 4000 miles long. Most of the water is fresh but when you get near the ocean it becomes saltwater. It runs through Guyana, Ecuador, Venezuela, Bolivia, Brazil, Columbia, and Peru.There are over 3000 known species of fish that live in the Amazon River.

  11. Tourist Attraction #5 Huacachina Huachachia is a tiny oasis town surrounding a small natural lake and itself surrounded by towering sand dunes. The big draw here is the opportunity to sand board and take dune buggy rides on the sand dunes that surround the town.

Fun Facts • The potato is originally from Peru and they produce over 3000 varieties. • The tomato is originally from Peru. • The avocado is originally from Peru and they produce the softest kind. • Peruvian food has 468 different typical dishes . • The finest cottons in the world are Peruvian. • The weeping willow is originally from Peru • Tara is a Peruvian tree from which tannin is produced to help make dyes. • The National University of San Marcos is the oldest in the Americas and was founded in May of 1551. • The oldest newspaper in South America is El Peruano, founded by Simon Bolivar in Lima in 1825

More Fun Facts • In Peru you can find close to 1625 types of orchids. • Sunflowers are native to Peru and were found around 1000 B.C. • Peru is the biggest producer in Latin America of gold, zinc and lead. It is the second world producer of copper. • You can find 28 different climates in Peru • In the Peruvian ocean you can find over 700 fish species and 400 crustaceans.
