  2. Animals in Peru • Capybara: Capybaras are the worlds largest rodent. They are closely related to the Guinea Pig. • Llama: Large pack animal that is a relative of the camel. Llamas can spit as a means of defense. • Yellow Tailed Woolly Monkey: A critically endangered animal that is native to Peru.

  3. Photos • The First Photo is the Corpus Christi Festival in Cusco. It was taken by Ernesto Ghigna • The Next is a view of the famous ruins of Machu Picchu. It was taken by TanawatLikitkererat. • The last is a picture of the Cathedral of Lima. It was taken by David Noton.

  4. Authors of Peru • Santiago Roncagliolo is the author of Red April, a novel published in 2009 • Alonso Cueto is the author of the novel, The Blue Hour • Marie Arana wrote the novel Lima Nights in 2008

  5. The government of Peru Peru has a representative democracy government. The current president is Alan Garcia Perez. Citizens have the right to life, and most other rights that are in place here. There is some discrimination also.

  6. Large Cities • Lima is the biggest with 7,870,000 citizens. • Arequipa is the second largest at 1,000,000 citizens. • Trujillo is the third largest and has 820,000 citizens.

  7. Culture • The Incas were the ancient that lived in Peru. The heart of the Inca empire was the city of Cusco. They were conquered by Francisco Pizarro in 1524. • Guinea Pig is a popular dish in Peru. • Llamas are still used as pack animals in some rural areas.

  8. Tourist Attractions. • Manu National Park is one of the many ecotourism sites in Peru • Cathedral of Arquipa is a famous cathedral in the city of Arquipa. • Machu Picchu is an ancient Inca city and the most visited attraction in Peru.

  9. History • Peru proclaimed it’s independence on July 28th, 1821. • However, the Spanish were not defeated until three years later. • Peru emerged from a 20 year dictatorship in 1945.

  10. Geography • Peru extends 1,500 miles along the pacific ocean. • It is divided into three sections: Arid land by the coastlines, the mountain area in central Peru with peaks of 20,000 feet, and the heavily forested area to the east leading to the Amazonian plains. • It is surrounded by Columbia, Ecuador, Brazil, Bolivia, and Chile.

  11. Exotic foods • Iguanas are a favorite delicacy along the coast. Their eggs are a major item on the black market. • Armadillo is tasty in a stew. You have to catch it before it burrows into the ground! • As mentioned before, we barbecue beef, and Peruvians barbecue cute little furry guinea pigs. Before… After.

  12. Famous People from Peru • Mara Julia Mantilla was Miss World in 2004. • Sofia Mulanovich became world champion of women surfers. • Nolberto Solano is one of Peru’s all time best soccer players.
