  1. Parent Workshop Literacy, Numeracy and Health & Well-Being 12th September 2019

Early/First level approach • All learning is followed on from nursery through each child’s developmental overviews passed on from nursery • Developmental approach • Progression framework • Daily Phonics • Word/Picture books • Word tins • Daily hands on activities to enhance fine motor skills ready for writing such as; tweezer games, playdough shapes, crafts, scissor skills and pipe cleaner shapes • Each child is constantly assessed/observed to see where they are in their learning

  3. Listening and Talking • Progressions from early to second level • Words Up - thinking time, open ended questions • Prepare a talk once a term (show and tell for our younger pupils to start with) • Debate and topical discussions through reading and topic • Circle Time/Health • Oral feedback and reflective thinking

  4. Phonics and Spelling • Teacher session and follow-up each week, reinforced through reading and writing sessions • Initial sounds - s, a, t, p, i, n • Blends - bl, th, ch • Common words - bronze, silver, gold, etc • Jolly Grammar • Wraparound Spelling • More complex patterns - reinforced through writing

Reading • Initially a focus on word building and phonics knowledge • Books go home towards end of term one, into term 2 for primary 1 after first initial blends • Early/first have 4 weekly sessions - with class teacher, PSAs and independent/follow up work • Second level have 3 weekly reading sessions - (groups/ class) before, after and follow up sessions or whole class novel studies with follow up comprehension work • Transfer of skills through topic research - online or in books • Through reading, looking at grammar, author language, etc • Read to daily - also done through topic work

  6. Writing • Daily writing through cross curricular activities • Weekly ‘big’ writing lesson • Functional, imaginative and personal writing focus linked to topic and real life experiences • Editing and redrafting • Co-operative/shared writing

  7. Numeracy • Number identification/recognition • Place Value • Addition • Subtraction • Multiplication • Division • Fractions,decimals, percentages • Money

  8. Maths • Information Handling • Shape, angles and symmetry • Measure - area, volume, length • Time • Pattern and Relationships (also numeracy)

  9. Numeracy and Maths • 4 main weekly teaching sessions • Mental maths daily • Basic facts weekly • Station approach plus class teaching session • Active and experiential maths as well as written maths • Focus on number
