Agenda • Automated Benchmarking • Overview of ABS 1.0 • The next generation of ABS: version 2.0 • ABS 2.0 Release Schedule • Impact of implementing ABS 2.0 on California Utilities • Questions and Discussion
Overview of Automated Benchmarking • Automated Benchmarking (AB): • Describes a process that involves both the Portfolio Manager user and Energy Service Provider (ESP) • Involves the submission of building and energy information and the exchange of Ratings and related performance metrics • Requires the use of the Automated Benchmarking System (ABS)
ABS 1.0:Overview • Released in September 2005, ABS 1.0 was EPA’s first generation automated benchmarking platform • Designed initially for whole building energy information providers • Introduced two primary web services: • Data Management Service (DMS) – for adding, updating, and deleting building and meter data • Rating Exchange Service (RES) – for requesting the ENERGY STAR Rating and related energy and environmental performance metrics • Majority of buildings being provided were new • Few data mappings were needed; any needed mappings were performed manually with Portfolio Manager technical support • Approximately 60 organizations have signed up to use ABS • 22 organizations registered as EPA-approved ESPs in Portfolio Manager
ABS 1.0:Features • ABS 1.0 focused primarily on whole building management and ratings exchange with a small suite of accompanying tools for system testing and account management
The Next Generation of ABS: version 2.0
Evolution to ABS 2.0 • Utilities were the primary driver for deciding to upgrade to ABS 2.0 • Utilities are facing several challenges towards achieving complete automation of benchmarking with version 1.0 • Primarily providing meter consumption data; current services are not “tuned” to optimally support this • Authorizing the release of data requires customer identifying information that ABS did not support • Meter management capabilities are limited • Mapping data to an existing Portfolio Manager building is a core part of the service model for Utilities • Capabilities to map to an existing building did not exist in ABS 1.0
ABS 2.0 Objectives • Deliver true “automated” benchmarking • Eliminate system workarounds for ESPs • Reduce the amount of data upload errors that result in duplication and incorrect mapping • Enable ESPs to extract data from Portfolio Manager account (to fill gaps/troubleshoot issues) • Provide more descriptive messaging to ESPs • Reduce the need to engage Portfolio Manager technical support • Minimize disruption to existing ESPs
ABS 2.0 Features:Overview • ABS 2.0 will offer true end-to-end automation through new and significantly enhanced services and tools
Current Phase of ABS 2.0 Development We are currently in the early stages of our Design Phase
ABS 2.0 Features ACCOUNT SETUP ABS Account Setup
ABS 2.0 Feature Descriptions:Account Setup • ABS Account Setup (for ESPs) • Setting up a separate Test account will no longer be needed • Primary account will be used for all transactions including both Test and Production • Continue to access Account Setup feature through ABS website (https://www.energystar.gov/istar/has)
ABS 2.0 Features TEST SYSTEM ABS Account Management Website Test Clients Separate Test Environment
ABS 2.0 Feature Description:Test System • ABS Account Management website (https://www.energystar.gov/istar/has) • Continue to provide online access to test clients and related technical documentation • Web Services Clients • All current test clients, and instructions for developing a test client, will be updated to support new ABS 2.0 web services • Sample test data will be available to ESPs to use to help initially test all web services
ABS 2.0 Feature Description:Test System (cont’d) • Separate Test Environment • ABS Account Management website will allow ESP to access the new Test Environment • All web services requests to Test Environment will need to point to a new service with a different WSDL location • All Beta Releases will be deployed in new Test Environment one month prior to official launch • Primary account information (username/password) can be used to submit data to Test Environment • A copy of any building and meter data that a Portfolio Manager user authorizes an ESP to access will be placed into that ESP’s Test space • At any point, except during a Beta Release period, an ESP will be able to refresh the test copy with what’s currently stored in Production
ABS 2.0 Features GOING LIVE WITH ABS Request Official Registration as an EPA-approved ESP Review and Approval of ESP Registration Requests
ABS 2.0 Feature Description:Going Live with ABS • Request Official Registration as an EPA-approved ESP • Upon registration approval, an ESP displays in Portfolio Manager as a company that any user can authorize to perform automated benchmarking for their account
ABS 2.0 Feature Description:Going Live with ABS (cont’d) • Request Official Registration as an EPA-approved ESP (cont’d) • Requesting Registration will now require an ESP to provide a(n): • Organization Name they want listed in Portfolio Manager • Contact for the Registration process • Contact for the Automated Benchmarking service (this contact will be made available to Portfolio Manager users) • General Automated Benchmarking usage estimates • Level of Automated Benchmarking Service offered including Fuel types supported (Whole Building or Meter Only) • Information required to approve a Portfolio Manager user AB authorization request and complete an automated system-to-system mapping • Legal Disclaimer to Portfolio Manager user for requesting Automated Benchmarking (optional)
ABS 2.0 Feature Description:Going Live with ABS (cont’d) • Review and Approval of Registration Requests • EPA will review all requests and work with ESPs to complete their registration • EPA will work with already approved ESPs to complete registration to conform to ABS 2.0 requirements
ABS 2.0 Features PORTFOLIO MANAGER ACCOUNT SETUP Portfolio Manager Account Registration Building Import Templates
ABS 2.0 Feature Description:Portfolio Manager Account Setup • Portfolio Manager Account Registration • All Portfolio Manager users will need to register for a Portfolio Manager account prior to authorizing an ESP to submit data for their account or buildings • Portfolio Manager Account registration can still be accessed at https://www.energystar.gov/istar/pmpam • Building Import Templates • Building import templates will continue to be available to help Portfolio Manager users submit 10 or more new buildings into the system • Import templates will not automatically enable automated benchmarking; must be done through Portfolio Manager
ABS 2.0 Features AUTHORIZE ESP Data Release Authorization
ABS 2.0 Feature Description:Authorize ESP • Data Release Authorization • Portfolio Manager user will authorize ESP to provide automated benchmarking through a new Authorize interface • Account-level – submitting new buildings in an existing Portfolio Manager account • Building-level – submitting building and meter data for an existing building in an existing Portfolio Manager account • Meter-level – submitting meter data for an existing building in an existing Portfolio Manager account • Authorization is only required for data that already exists in Portfolio Manager • If a Portfolio Manager account does not already exist, any new building submitted by the ESP will automatically set up a new account
ABS 2.0 Feature Description:Authorize ESP (cont’d) • Data Release Authorization (cont’d) • Authorization requirements for the Portfolio Manager user are determined based on ESP Registration preferences • Data management cannot occur until the ESP both confirms authorization and has mapped their system to the particular Portfolio Manager account, building, and/or meter authorized
