  1. Summit Ink January 13, 2012 Issue 7 Honoring one of the greats, Martin Luther King, Jr. Tashawna Alvarado, Sports/Special Events Editor There was a man born on January 15, 1929. He believed in the power non-violent demonstrations and the power of words. His name was Martin Luther King Jr. By 1970, people where celebrating Martin Luther King Day on his birthday, until it became a holiday, when the federal government observed a holiday for him. We celebrate Martin Luther King Day because we want to honor his life. We also show respect, and he is one of our nation’s honorable Civil Rights leaders. He stood for not only blacks, but for all people. When his family traveled to Europe in 1934 and visited Germany his father soon changed both of their names to Martin Luther King. His name before was Michael Luther King. He changed their names to honor the Germans and the German Protestant leader Martin Luther. King skipped the 9th and 12th grade year of high school and graduated at the age of 15. In March 1963, in Washington, where Martin Luther King did his most famous speech “I have a dream.” Martin Luther King was married to Coretta Scott King, and he had four children. He had two boys and two girls. Their names were Yolanda Denise King, Martin Luther King III, Dexter Scott King and Bernice Alberta King. His parents were his father Martin Luther King Sr. and his mother, Alberta Williams King. Martin Luther King was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Tennessee. He died at the age of 39. His funeral was April 9, 1968. The person that killed Martin Luther King was James Earl Ray. He was sentenced to ninety-nine years in prison. James Ray died in prison from of hepatitis C. Marin Luther King influences were Jesus, Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi and many other people. If I had the chance to ask Martin Luther King one question it would be why he didn’t keep the traditions going on by naming his sons Martin Luther King after himself. I learned a little more on Martin Luther King as I researched him. To this day, King still impacts our society. Life would be different if it wasn’t for Martin Luther King. He was a great man and treated everyone the same way he wanted to be treated, with respect. Eric Rumph, Artist

  2. 2 Opinion Page The Chronicles of the Jelly Fisher Cameron’s Corner Ausanae Cameron, Opinion/Profile Editor Ryan Fisher, Opinion Editor The winter season is almost over and we have barely had an inch of snow. We have had everything from rain, thunderstorms, tornados, to even earthquakes. I am not the only one thinking this is strange. There is much speculation on this random weather we are having. The question everyone is asking is: where is winter at? My opinion of this is that it is global warming. Scientists have studied global warming for many years and they know for sure that the earth is heating up. I am curious to see how this will effect this summer. Global warming is the cause of many things. I feel it is a fact that global warming is changing our planet. On New Years Eve, I felt my first earthquake. My aunt was at my house visiting for the holidays from Washington State because she is stationed up there on a naval base. She grew up in Youngstown and when she felt the ground shake, she would have never thought that it was an earthquake, because she has never felt anything like that before. People are saying that the end of the world will happen in 2012, just because of the movie that was made. This movie is not real we do not know when the world will end or even if it is going to end. All of that stuff that happened in the movie is likely to happen, but that does not mean the world will end. Tragedies happen everywhere all the time, we can not predict them nor stop them, we can only recover. The world does not have an expiration date. These earthquakes in Ohio are man made. One thing is for sure, the quake on New Years Eve was a strange way to start the New Year. It’s a new year, and there has already been a murder in Youngstown. When are people going to realize violence is not the answer? More teenagers are losing their lives by gang violence. In my opinion, people need to stop fighting because they are putting their lives in jeopardy. Everyone thinks it is cool to hangout in the streets and fight just to claim a name for themselves to a gang. People need to realize that they are not fighting anymore; they’re killing people. Life is too short to live by violence. Families are suffering from losing loved ones. Too many teenagers are being killed; soon, there will be no future generations. I have lost friends and family due to Youngstown violence. I hope that people open their eyes and realize violence doesn’t solve the problem; it just makes a bigger problem. I asked some students in our school how they feel about the Youngstown violence. I started with Monique Robinson. I asked her how she felt about it, and she said, she feels bad about it. I also asked her what she thought the people in Youngstown could do to stop the violence, and she said they should take the guns away. I then asked if she felt safe In Youngstown, and she said no. I asked then Edward Dothard how he felt about the violence in Youngstown. He said that he feels that sometimes violence is necessary. Edward said to stop the violence in Youngstown, they should clean up the streets. When I asked him if he felt safe in Youngstown, he said no. Afterwards, I asked Julius Joy how he felt about Youngstown violence; he feels he’s in danger when he wakes up. I then asked him what he thinks Youngstown needs to do to stop the violence. He said that they should enforce more laws and start something for the people to join together. The last person I asked about Youngstown violence was Eva Baker. I asked her what she thought about Youngstown violence. She said that she feels bad about the violence. Also, I asked her what she thinks Youngstown could do to stop the violence; she said put everyone that’s killing in jail. I asked her if she feels safe, and she said no. I respect everyone’s answers. I really hope that people get their acts together, so we can feel safe in our own city.

  3. Summit skates for January incentive Anthony Hughes, News Editor This month’s incentive at Summit Academy Secondary has been changed from sledding and ice skating to roller skating. Recently, I sat down with Mrs. Vaupel and asked questions about the sudden change in events. First, I asked Mrs. Vaupel about our back up plan of this month’s incentive was. According to Mrs. Vaupel, “Due to the weather issues, instead of going sledding and ice skating we will be going roller skating at the skate zone on Wednesday January 25th.” My next question for her was whether or not lunch will be served here at school, or if lunches will be provided. According to Mrs. Vaupel, “We will be eating lunch early at school.” There will also be a concession stand open provided at the skating rink. Following that question, I then asked what time we will be leaving and what we will be back. According to Mrs. Vaupel “We will be leaving the school around noon; we will leave the Skate Zone by 2:45, and students will be dismissed by 3:00.” With that said, my final question to Mrs. Vaupel was about the transportation. According to Mrs. Vaupel, “We will be taking a bus to and from the Skate zone.” The Skate Zone will provide us with their own bus. Well, there you have it. Here is some information about this month’s incentive. For more information about it, please see Mrs. Vaupel, Mr. Hart, Mrs. Crawford, or Mr. Laney. 3 Snowflake Ball Review Keegan Caban, Entertainment Editor Just before winter break, we had the Snowflake Ball monthly incentive. I got some people’s opinions about the Snowflake Ball. The first person I talked to was Davail Dow. Davail like the dance, “My favorite part was when they played his jam.” he said. Davailsaid “His favorite snack was the white chocolate pretzels.” He also enjoyed the music. “The music was cool but could have been better,” Davail said. All in all he liked the decoration, “The decoration were cool, but there could have been more,” he said. Though Santa made a guest appearance, Davail wasn’t impressed, “He didn’t like Santa Claus.” Davail said, “I was the best dancer at the dance, not Santa” I also interviewed Michael Johnson on his opinions about the dance. Johnson stated, “My favorite part of the dance was seeing Mr. Hart dancing in Santa Claus suit,” he said Michael said, “My favorite snack was the white hot chocolate drink.” All in all, Michael like the music at the dance. “The music was cool, but needed more of variety of music party mix,” said Mike. Michael like the decoration at the dance and stated, “Yeah the decorations were cool.” Though he liked Santa, he had mix feelings. Michael thought the best dancer was, “Tanisha was the best dancer,” Mike said. In closing, Michael talked about the funniest moment of the dance, “The funniest thing at the dance was seeing Mr. McCarty doing the jerk on the dance floor.” Marcus Harris, Artist

The kind of music he listens to is alternative and classical music. He loves to read science fiction and historical fiction because it is so interesting and it is also what he teaches. His favorite kind of food he eats is Mexican, because he loves spicy food. His favorite colors are blue and green he likes those colors because they are relaxing. Next, I asked Mrs. Crawford what the strangest thing about Mr. Logston is, she said, “He treats his cat like a human being.” She has known Mr. Logston for three years. She also learned that he is a dedicated teacher and an awesome hockey player. Mrs. Crawford also said, “He makes coming to work great, and he is great to work with. He is always willing to help me and I like that.” He is always a good guy and he is so awesome with the eighth graders. After talking with Mr.Logston, I have learned a lot about him. I would like to thank Mrs. Crawford also for giving me more information on Mr.Logston. Recently, I sat down with another senior JontaLafantaine, and he is a very interesting person. I learned a lot about him. For instance, he thinks it is a lot of work being a senior. Tournaments at Boys & Girls Club and Summit Round Robin Regine Mitchell, Editor in Chief Get ready for the biggest tournament of the year. On January 23, 2012, there will be the Round Robin tournament. When I asked Mrs. Brown who organized the tournament and how that person goes about doing it, she replied, “Ms. Scott and I started with a couple of e-mail’s regarding the schedule with other Summit Academy schoolsfor just some regular games.” Through e-mail’s, the decision was made to do a tournament with a few other Summit Academy schools. There will be three Summit schools playing together, Canton, Parma, and Youngstown. The Round Robin tournament will be held at the Summit Academy Elementary school on Youngstown’s Westside. The team will be wearing their school jerseys as usual. When I asked Mrs. Brown what time the tournament will start, she replied, “It starts at 10am Monday, January 23.” “There will be concession stands (to benefit the senior class) and the school will provide lunches for only the players, teachers and coach’s”, Mrs. Brown said, when I asked if there will be food and drinks at the tournament for the friends and family and everyone else, she said no. The Summit Knights think that they have this tournament in the bag and their confidence will help them win this game and take home the prize. Hopefully, the Knights will win the game. They really do deserve it but if they don’t put any effort in the game they just might not win and the other teams from different towns will take home the prize. The Summit Knights needs our support to win this game!

Mild, yet wild winter sparks comments from Summit body Ryan Fisher, Opinion Editor I went around the school and interviewed several students and several teachers on their opinions of winter, I asked about four questions to everyone that I interviewed. The first person I interviewed was Ausanae. She gave me some good straight up answers. I asked her if she likes winter and she told me that she does not, because of the snow; plus, it is very cold. When I asked her what she does during the winter season, she told me she stays in the house and stays warm. I also asked her what her favorite season is and she told me her favorite season is spring because that is when the snow melts. She told me to stay warm when I asked her my final question which was what her favorite thing to do was during winter. The second person I interviewed on her opinion of winter was April Hamlet. She likes winter, because she gets to throw snow at people and go sled riding. She eats ice cream and sleeps most of the time during winter. April’s favorite season is summer because it is hot and there is a lot more to do in the summer than any other season. Next, I interviewed TeshiraTarver. She does not like winter, because of Christmas and because of her family. She sleeps during winter like many others. Her favorite season is summer, because she is able to get a tan. Teshira’s favorite thing to do to past the time during winter is to watch TV. The next student I inter viewed was Edward Dothard. He likes winter, because of Christmas. Edward is another that sleeps during winter. His favorite season is winter. Those were the students I interviewed. After I interviewed the students I began to interview some teachers. The first teacher I interviewed was Mr. Pallante. He likes winter; because of when it snows everything looks pretty. During winter, he hunts deer and rides four wheelers. Fall is his favorite season because football starts up and also because it is not too hot or too cold. He also likes fall, because of the change in colors on the trees and the hunting season begins. Mr. P says that his favorite thing to do during winter is to sit by the fire place and read to stay cozy. I also interviewed Mr. Buente and Ms. Corky. They both like winter, but Ms. Corky loves it. Mr. Buente likes it because he likes the change in season and he says it gets boring being real hot. Ms. Corky loves it because the snow looks so pretty. I asked them what they do during winter and Mr. Buente said he works and works out a lot more, while Ms. Corky takes her grandkids and her dog out to play in the snow. Years ago, she used to ice skate. Both of their favorite seasons are fall. Mr. Buente likes fall, because football begins. Ms. Corky likes Fall, because the cool weather, the beautiful colors on the trees, and because it is very relaxing. Her favorite thing to do during winter is go to bingo, bake cakes, pies, and brownies. Everyone I interviewed had their own separate opinions about winter and what they do.
