  1. Summit Ink October 3, 2013 Issue 3 Summit Knights Summit Academy honors its first Students of the Month It is bout that time! You know what time it is; it is Student of the Month time! Unplug those earphones, sharpen those pencils and listen up if you want to win student of the month. To become student of the month, you must complete all of your work. You can not be disrespectful and you must try to get along with everyone if possible. If you have a beef with someone, just walk away. Do not let them ruin your chances of getting Student of the Month. If you try your best and are on time to your classes, you might be able to win. When your name is called and you are in that lunch room, you will get so excited. You will be proud of yourself. Everyone will clap for you and yell your name. It is just a great feeling!!! Tamiah White-Ellis, Opinion Editor Students of Month Timmy Davis, Tamia White-Ellis, and Mariah Diaz with Mr. Powell • Recently, I sat down with this year’s first Student of the Month winners. Here is what everyone had to say. • The Eighth grade Student of the Month winner was Timmy Davis. He did not think he was going to win and he is very proud of himself. • The ninth grade Student of the Month winner was Mariah Diaz. She said, “I felt surprise; I did not think I would win.” She feels good now that she has won. • The tenth grade Student of the Month was me, Tamia White-Ellis. I did not think I was going to win, because there was a lot of competition. I am proud of myself now that I have it. I am going to try to aim for my third one! • The eleventh grade Student of the Month was RayahJenkins. She was surprised. She says, “It was nothing to me.” • She did not think she was going to win. I asked her now that she has it, how she felt. She said, “It really did not matter to me.” • The twelfth grade Student of the Month was Qwon Dow. He says it was cool and he felt excited. He did not think he was going to win. He closed by saying, “I am going to work even harder towards next month.” • Congratulations to all the Student of the Month winners! Summit students observe breast cancer awareness month Danielle Kleine, Photo Editor Well we all know it is breast cancer awareness month. There are so many people with breast cancer in this world. It is not easy being told that you have breast cancer. Then having to deal with it everyday. Being in an out the hospital and having you hair falling out. You can die from it but you can also fight it. You have to go to chemo therapy to help treat it. There are 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. I personally don’t know anyone that has breast cancer but my grandmother has been tested for it and so good. Breast cancer continue on page 2

  2. 2 TWE Time Opinion Page Cameron’s Corner Tamiah White-Ellis, Opinion Editor Ausanae Cameron, Opinion Editor Brrr, it is getting cold in here, Summit Academy! We need some jackets in this atmosphere! I like wearing all types of jackets, because they are so comfortable. Some of the jackets I wear are this, this, and this. Recently, I have been noticing that our Knights also have been wearing some nice jackets. One person in particular looks really comfortable in his jacket; his name is Amir Leonardo. He likes wearing Zoo York jackets. He says he got it from J. C. Penny’s. I asked him if he wears it all the time. He answered, “No, I do not wear it all of the time.” I asked him, if he did not have his Zoo York jacket, what would he would wear. He said he would wear an Aeropostale jacket. I also interviewed Tyrasia Riley. Her jackets always fit her right! She likes jean jackets, army jackets and just plain jackets. Her favorite jacket is an Army jacket. I asked her if she could not wear her Army jackets, what she would wear. She said, “I would wear a jean jacket.” I asked why, and she said that jean jackets go with everything. Sometimes boy jackets are more comfortable than girl jackets. I feel like they make boy jackets thicker than girl jackets. Boys, if you have a Boo or if you see a girl in need of some warmth, give them your jacket. Girls like boys like that! That is all from TWE!! Why are you a mentor? Why do you take it so serious? What is mentoring about? I’m a mentor because I enjoy helping others get through their problems I like that there is a group of young people that care for others enough to listen to their problems and help them instead of judging them my most important part about mentoring is leading people to the right direction and show them the wrong things that they see aren’t the way to live living the right way is not wrong. I take mentoring serious because it is my job and it is also important to make sure we are serious so people really know we are a group of young people who care for others and help to lead them to the right direction we are trying to make a change we need to take that serious. Mentoring is about making a change and helping others being leaders. Summit students observe breast cancer awareness month continued from page 1 Danielle Kleine, Photo Editor She just previously went in for another test. Now ow, we are waiting for her results to come back. Breast cancer is a big deal; you just can’t ignore it like its nothing. Both men and women can get it, but there is a far lower chance for men to get it than women. So if you have signs of breast cancer please go see your doctor. Do not just put it off like its nothing. Recently I sat down with Mrs. Crow. Her cousins wife was diagnosed with breast cancer she had a double mastectomy. She had chemotherapy, then it returned. She stared to go the natural way eating healthy, she didn’t eat meat or drink any milk products. She only ate organic products. The cancer came back about a year later, and 6months she past away; May she rest in peace!! Mrs. Crow’s story is very sad. Hopefully if we all take proper precautions, we can all have the best chancer of beating breast cancer in the future Danielle Kleine, Photo Editor

  3. Profile Page 3 Mrs. Ewing Andre’ Jacobs, Editor in Chief Brianna Riverra Andre’ Jacobs, Editor in Chief Oh snap, we are back for another Teacher profile. It is the third issue of the school year, and we have ”newbie” yet again. I mistook her for another teacher when she was first brought to my attention, but that’s irrelevant to the profile. Hey, everyone makes mistakes, right? Any who, lets get profiling. Mrs. Ewing has been teaching at Summit Academy for about a month and a half now. Teaching was not her first job, however. Before she taught, she worked in manufacturing, handling documents and data control. Before she came to Summit, she worked as a principal at Fairhaven School. Mrs. Ewing was asked if she liked being a teacher and she replied, “Yes because I get to be creative.” She said the students are all so different, and that what makes the job interesting. Mrs. E also has an athletic side as well. She has a teaching license in physical education and health, so you should know that she knows how to keep in shape. She used to run and she also played basketball from third grade to her senior year of high school. Well, at least we know one teacher who is possibly playing in the Students V. Teachers basketball game this year. In general, Mrs. E loves education. She feels she is always enjoying teaching for the students. However, she quoted, “Sometimes its not about me teaching you all; it is you teaching me as well.” She was asked what advice would she would give our graduating seniors this year. “I would tell the seniors to strive for success; I have five children and I am still working for myself,” she said. “I don’t want people to give up on their dreams.” We won’t let you down, Mrs. G. Welcome to Summit Academy! Hold up, wait a minute. Let me put some profiling in it. What’s up SA, y’all ready for another senior profile? No, well here it is anyway. This issue’s profile is the first female we’ve profiled this year. If you ask our teachers, this young lady has a lot of potential, she’s smart and has a lot going for herself. She is also a member of Summit Ink. Although she is not here during the class, she’s been in Summit Ink since last school year. This senior also has three siblings who also attend Summit. Brianna Rivera, 17, has attended Summit since her sophomore year, before she came to Summit; however, she attended Chaney high. Brianna has one child by the name of Khallie Rivera, and she will be nine months on the 15th. Oh, did I mention that Brianna’s birthday is two days after her daughter’s day? Imagine how much money will be spent in that week. I asked Bri if she wants to have anymore children and she responded, “Yes, but not anytime soon.” Brianna goes to Choffin for EMT, Phlebotomy and she is also works in a nursing home. Bri stated that she loves her job because “You get close to the residents and they start telling you all types of stories. Even if it’s not true it is still pretty interesting.” Bri stated she doesn’t see herself being a EMT for the rest of her life because they don’t get paid enough. By the sound of that you know where her mind state is when it comes to work. The thing Bri doesn’t like about her job is people who don’t do the job the right way and the mistreating of the residents. Brihas three different colleges that want her to apply because they liked her high school records. If you never seen a independent girl, you just read about one.

  4. Entertainment Page 4 World War Z is a World War F, a review by Matthew Abaren Matthew Abaren, Entertainment Editor It is time to set the mood for Halloween and watch some scary movies. This time, I will be reviewing the new zombie flick World War Z, a film based on the book by Max Brooks. First, let’s take a look at the definition of the word ‘cliché’; “Cliché: A phrase or expression that has been used so often that it is no longer original or interesting.” There is the review. That’s all folks. Okay, maybe that does not qualify as a review. But hey, that definition pretty much sums up this movie. This movie consists of the same rehashed, formulaic plot you would see in any other zombie apocalypse movie. It was so dull that I found myself falling asleep throughout most of it. If you absolutely love anything zombie related or are just desperate, this is the picture to watch. Here’s a joke: Brad Pitt. He plays the role of the main protagonist, Mr. Dumb and Uninteresting (He is so boringly ordinary that I could not remember his name). The main character is your typical copy and paste hero who saves the day. He has an uninteresting family of two children and a wife that serves no purpose besides having worried looks through half of the movie. Brad Pitt is a horribly overrated actor and does nothing to make his character remarkable, except for having a few dumb moments. The movie is unoriginal and uninteresting. There are some stupidly cartoonish moments such as when the zombies pile up over a giant wall built around Jerusalem, or when Brad Pitt attempts to scare off some thugs by charging at them, rather than using the GUN IN HIS HAND. The characters in the movie are normal, uninspired, and are basically filler throughout this movie. It only gets more exciting during the final moments in the research center, when the characters have to sneak past zombies to find the cure. Then, the movie ends (Thank God). Here is another comparison: would you rather have a nice big sirloin steak (The Walking Dead), a bucket of fried chicken (Shaun of The Dead), or some disgusting burger from McDonalds filled with lots of preservatives and unhealthy artificial substances (World War Z)? Save yourself the time and money by avoiding this forgettable film. It sucks. 3/10 Matthew Abaren, Artist Slender Man Review Quentin Hartley, Entertainment Editor Slender Man is an internet based fictional character (creepy Pasta). He is most famous for eating children and stealing them from their home. Slender man is unnaturally tall and has extremely long arms. He has the abilityto teleport and lives in the woods. He also has weird tentacle things that comeout of his back. He wears a black suit and has no facial features and is pale as snow. He is extremely hostile and will stalk and kill anyone he sees.Slender Man was created in 2009 by Victor Surge. It was posted on forums andbecame a popular meme. It was created in a contest to edit photos to assupernatural things in them. Slender man became viral and many users began to create fan art evolving his original form. In 2012, Slender Man was adapted intovideo game titled Slender, The Eight Pages. Slender the eight pages had over twomillion downloads in 2012. The game consists of avoiding slender man while obtaining 8 pages around the map. The difficulty increases every time you collect a page. The game ends once you find all 8 pages or if Slender Man gets you.Personally I think that slender man alone isn’t very scary. He has had some fights in the past with other creepy pasta characters, like Jeff the killer. I think for him to become frightening you also need to add the spooky environment (the woods) and loud sounds when he is following you. Slender Man is a great fictional character and I hope to see more of him in the future. Ashley Menton, Sports/News Editor

Sports Page 5 Knights slay Dragons in first Summit Academy football game Ashley Menton, Sports/News Editor Today is the 11th of October which is a big day for the Summit Knights flag football players.
