  1. Summit Ink October 31, 2011 Issue 3 Students fall into a good time at autumn-themed incentive Brion Koenig, Sports, Special Events Editor For this October’s incentive, Summit Academy visited Detwiler Farms in Columbiana, Ohio. On October 20, 2011, the Summit students departed off for a fun morning filled with corn mazes, animals, hay rides and just plain fun. I unfortunately opted out of attending. However, I recently sat down with Keegan Caban to get his thoughts on the corn maze. “Well, it was very rainy, cold and muddy day.,” he said. “The corn maze had lots of corn stalks; the hay ride was awesome but shaky and really muddy.” The funniest moment was when he threw an apple and accidentally hit Jhordan Jackson in the head. He also thought the straw maze was very irritating because he couldn’t see. “We also got pumpkins it was very unexpected, but all in all it was a awesome incentive,” Caban stated. Cevon McMullen , a senior, said that he enjoyed the corn maze and hay ride, because he did not have to walk. Also, he enjoyed the maze because he got out of the maze all by himself. He was mad that his shoes got all dirty after the maze. The funniest thing that happened to Cevon McMullen was when he got to mess with a goat; it almost hit him. All in all it was fun to get out of school and go to this incentive. Chaz Starkey, Tyrell Jefferson, James Butler, Mathew Hipple, and Paul Moore pose for a quick, fun photograph at Detwiler farms Summit students excitedly feed goats at Detwiler petting zoo PBS system undergoes big change; students respond positively Tashawna Alvarado, Sports/Special Events Editor There will be some changes regarding the PBS tickets to help students get Knight Bucks. Students will be able to trade in five PBS tickets for one Knight Buck. I interviewed Mr. Trip and asked him some questions about the PBS changes. While talking to Mr. Trip, I asked him who made up this idea and he responded, “The discipline committee, because it can improve our school.” Then, I asked Mr. Trip if he thought that this was going to be a good idea . He responded, “Yes it’s a good idea; it will make students want to do better in class.” Story Continued on Page 5 Mr. Trip, Mrs. Orlando get lost in a good time at the corn maze Summit students go on hayride to pick their own pumpkins!

  2. 2 Opinion Page The Chronicles of the Jelly Fisher Detentions, About That… Lisa Dejesus, Photographer, Opinion Editor Since I have been coming to Summit Academy, I have only been to detention once, and it is flat out BORING! Since then, I have been trying to stay as far away as possible from detention at all times. You earn detentions by obviously doing things you are not suppose to be doing, breaking the rules. Whether it is getting caught with your phone out, swearing, talking back, or being disrespectful, or etc. I recently got a chance to interview Mrs. Orlando, one of the Disciplinary Committee members that monitors detention, about how she feels on the subject. I asked Mrs. Orlando about her likes and dislikes about detention, and she responded, “Umm, I don’t think I like anything about detention because it is suppose to be a punishment not a reward, and I really dislike the number of students attending detention.” She also said, “It really disappoints me because these students in detentions should be aware of the rules of the school and know not to break them.” In my opinion, I think detentions have always been a waste of time, but it gets the point across that you made a poor decision and there are consequences for misbehavior. The part I hate about detention the most is having to stay until 4:00pm instead of getting to go home at 3:18pm. I also do not like that it is in Mr. Pallante’s office. Ryan Fisher, Opinion Editor The Canfield Scare Ground is a great place to go and have some fun on Halloween. Any haunted house would be fun to go to around Halloween, but I would recommend this one because it is close. The Scare Grounds has over one-hundred twenty live monsters. A lot of ghouls, killers and creeps will be waiting around every corner for a good victim to scare. The monsters only seem to focus mainly on people who look the most afraid. That is the key if you go; do not let them think that you are afraid or they will make your fear become reality. If you go to the Scare Grounds be sure to bring a date because women get scared the most, and they will want protection. Women like to know and feel that they are safe. They will get scared and stay right by your side holding your arm the whole time you are there. The Scare Grounds are open for a limited time only so act fast because Halloween time will be over soon! The open hours are pretty reasonable. The scare grounds last day open is tonight for Halloween. It was open from 7:00 until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. On Sundays, they were open from 7:00 until 10:00. The prices are pretty reasonable as well. Tickets for the haunted house and the mist combo cost $12.00 for adults and $7.00 for kids under the age of ten. The hayride and the mist combo tickets cost $10.00 for adults and $6.00 for kids under ten-years old. The combo price for all three: house, hayride, and the mist for adults is $20.00. For kids under ten- years old for this combo will only cost you $10.00. The Scare Grounds opened on September 23rd, and continued through October 31st. If you have not went yet get your tickets and head to Canfield. You will be in for a big fright! Happy Halloween!!!

  3. Profile Page 3 Mr. McCartyMusic Teacher Brion Koenig, Sports/Special Events Editor Elizabeth SopkovichSchool Vice President Marcus Harris, Profile Editor Recently, I sat down with Mr. Hart’s double ganger, Mr. McCarty. Mr. McCarty said that this fact is true to an extent, even some teachers are calling him Mr. Hart. He wanted to come to Summit because it is an opportunity to work with students in small class sizes. Sometimes Mr. McCarty can let lose while playing the game he loved called: Call of Duty Modern War fare 3 on his PlayStation 3. He has some special qualities, like he is awesome and a good performer. Mr. McCarty also loves watching football and playing baseball. His favorite music he listens to is rock at this point, but changes constantly. His favorite thing to do is hang out with his fiancé when he is not composing music. He is engaged and will be married soon. This was an awesome experience talking and getting to know Mr. McCarty! Not long ago, I sat down with Liz Sopkovich. Recently, she was elected to be our very own Vice President of student council here at Youngstown Summit Academy. Liz stated, “I was thrilled about my victory!” She also stated, “I am very eager to go to college!” She continually talked about her college selection, Mount Union. Liz has plans before going to college, though. When I say plans I mean plans, Liz is planning to score high on the SAT’s; and that is a very big plan. She told me, “The seniors have an agenda before graduation and this agenda is going to be fun and we will go to exciting places.” I hope the seniors have a great time wherever they end up going before their graduation! Students NOT to wear costumes on thirty-firstKeegan Caban, Entertainment Editor I recently interviewed Mr. P about if we could dress-up for Halloween. He did not respond how I would have hoped. “Eh, no because we already had a Halloween incentive, the corns maze.” A lot of people feel we should be allowed to dress-up on the thirty-first of October to get into the Halloween spirit. Students and teachers alike should be able to wear costumes in celebration. There are some potential other arguments against wearing costumes to school. For starters, they would conflict with the school dress code. If we were allowed to dress in costumes, the costumes would not be showing any body parts and would be pre-approved by Mr. Pallante. In my opinion, I really don’t know if we should be able to wear costumes or not because if we did wear them there will be kids saying that others copy them and what not. Then, kids will get into fights, because others will say that they are a copycat. That is why we should not dress up.

  4. Entertainment Page 4 Paranormal Activity 3 gives chills to Summit student Review Brion Koenig, Sports/Special Events Editor Recently I saw Paranormal Activity 3. It was funny and scary at the same time. At certain parts, it made me jump a lot of times. There were four main characters: the dad Dennis, the mom Julie and the two girls Kristi and Katie. It all started when Dennis started to hear lots of noises, so he put up some cameras and noticed that Kristi was talking to an imaginary friend named Toby. He was not a friend after all; he was a really bad spirit. He was also very violent. You better watch out, for Toby he is going to come for you. To me, it was an awesome movie. I went all the way to Pittsburgh to go see it. It was so cold in the movie theater, because the air conditioning was stuck on. It made me jump a lot of the time. I went with the Youngstown Youth Police athletics league. It was so nice of them to take me with them. Even Mr. Hart saw it, and he stated, “I enjoyed it; it was better than the other two.” “The whole movie had lots of jumps all throughout, and the ending was quite the twist,” Mr. Hart said. “ I do not want spoil it, but the last twenty minuets were awesome.” All in all, I give it an A. Go see it today. Summit athletes fight, tackle for a chance to play game Anthony Hughes, News Editor Recently, I got the opportunity to interview Mr. Shelton, one of the football coaches here at Summit Secondary. I asked him when he thought we were going to have a game. Coach Shelton responded, “As of now, I do not know.” Coach Shelton was also unsure about where our game would be at. He is hoping our first game will be against Niles, but he stated, “I am not 100% about us playing them.” Coach Shelton also stated, “I believe we have one game scheduled.” Coach Shelton said, “Our football season should last about eight to ten weeks.” I also decided to interview some of the football players about playing some games. Football player Brion Koenig believes we deserve a game. He stated, “Football players should not play each other, we should be able to play other teams.” “We should be able to play the entire season,” Koenig said. He also agrees with me that we should have started practicing at the same time as the other schools. In all, I hope this is taken care of so we can have our first match! Summit football players warm up for intense practice Summit football players do jumping jacks Sedric Johnson and Coach Shleton

  5. Miscellaneous Page 5 PBS system undergoes big change; students respond positively Continued from Page 1 Tashawna Alvarado, Sports/Special Events Editor Mr. Trip also thinks that it will also allow us to earn more dress down days. Well, he hopes so. I asked Mr. Trip how long this was going to be going on, and he replied, “They’re going to see how it goes and review it after three months.” I asked Mr. Trip who we gave the five PBS tickets to and why. He said, “Just to your 7th period teacher, nobody else because students need to learn to keep the PBS tickets in one place. It’s like a bank account; you don’t want to give your money to anybody and the students need to stay organized.” To get a students opinion about the changes I interviewed Carl Fleeton aka C.J. I asked C.J. if he would trade in five PBS tickets for one Knight Buck, and he responded “Yeah, because it will help me get more Knight Bucks, so that I can go on more field trips.” Next, I asked C.J. if he thinks this a good idea. He said, “ Yeah, because kids can get Knight Bucks , so they can be just cooling on the bucks .” Most of the students in the school think that this is a good idea. The last question I asked to ask Mr. Fleeton would it change how he acts in class and he responded ,“Well, I don’t think it will effect me, because I act the way I act, nothing can change that.” All in all, it should prove to be an exciting new change. Tashawna Alvarado trades in five PBS tickets to Mr. Hart

  6. The Arts Page 6 Candy contest craze Regine Mitchell, Editor in Chief The 8th grade art contest was a doozy. Mrs. Newbrough, our art teacher, of course, set up a small art contest for the 8th graders. Mrs. Newbrough stated that, “The requirements for the contest were that the students had to draw a candy bar wrapper of their choice four times and each wrapper must have a specific color scheme; one in black and white, one in original color, one in warm colors, and one in cool colors.” The students were able to use pencil, black Sharpie, and Crayola markers to complete the project. Mr. P was the judge because he did not know which student drew each of the contestant’s work; so the contest was fair. Mrs. Newbrough also stated that, “The projects took about a week to complete and students were very motivated to win!” Mrs. Newbrough revealed the winner of the contest on Friday, October 22. The winner was able to select his or her favorite candy bar as the prize. The winner of the candy bar contest was James Tubbs! James stated, “It feels great to be the winner!” James also thinks he won because, “I am the best.” As the winner of the contest James selected a Twix candy bar; great job to James and all the other 8th grade contestants that participated.
