  2. Index • Talk Introduction • Benefits of Sleep • Result of Sleep Loss

  3. Talk Introduction • About a third of our life time, but do we really understand it? • 2000 years ago: Galen “brain juice” • Clear mind vs. murky mind • Refreshes & clears our mind

  4. Talk Introduction • A solution to brain’s basic needs • Body: lymphatic systems; Brain: CSF • Waste clearance, only when sleeping • Ex. Amyloid β-- Alzheimer's disease

  5. What’s more important… • What steals our time meant for sleeping?

  6. Benefits of Sleep • Improve memory • Curb inflammation • Spur creativity • Sharpen attention • Have a healthy weight Improve your grades

  7. Improves memory • Your mind is surprisingly busy while you snooze. • During sleep you can strengthen memories or "practice" skills learned while you were awake.------it’s a process called consolidation

  8. Curb inflammation • Research indicates that people who get less sleep—six or fewer hours a night—have higher blood levels of inflammatory proteins(ex:C-reactive protein)than those who get more. • These proteins may cause heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, and premature aging.

  9. Have a healthy weight • Sleep and metabolism are controlled by the same sectors of the brain. • When you are sleepy, certain hormones go up in your blood, and those same hormones drive appetite. • Therefore, If you are thinking about going on a diet, you might want to plan an earlier bedtime too.

  10. Result of Sleep Loss • Sleepiness Causes Accidents • Sleep Deprivation Can Lead to Serious Health Problems. • Lack of Sleep Kills Sex Drive • Lack of Sleep Ages Your Skin Same to Curb inflammation

  11. Sleepiness Causes Accidents • Sleep deprivation was a factor in some of the biggest disasters in recent history. • EX. the 1979 nuclear accident at Three Mile Island, the massive Exxon Valdez oil spill, the 1986 nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl, and others. • Cause Traffic accident---Drowsiness can slow reaction time as much as driving drunk

  12. Lack of Sleep Kills Sex Drive • Depleted energy, sleepiness, and increased tension may be largely to blame. • Therefore, sleep-deprived men and women report lower libidos and less interest in sex. • It may be due to low levels of testosterone secreted during the night.

  13. Lack of Sleep Ages Your Skin • When you don’t get enough sleep, your body releases more of the stress hormone cortisol. • In excess amounts, cortisol can break down skin collagen, the protein that keeps skin smooth and elastic. • It turns out that chronic sleep loss can lead to lackluster skin, fine lines, and dark circles under the eyes.
